A sign board at the east edge of the Union Pacific overpass was destroyed Tuesday afternoon after being ignited by a grass fire. The fire department arrived late, leaving the board virtually gone, and grass burned over a large area with no further property damage. Earlier, firemen controlled a grass fire eight miles east of town near a wheat field. They also extinguished a small kitchen blaze at Alma's Cafe around 10 p.m. Tuesday with minimal damage.
Murphy, an employee at Sioux Ordinance Depot, was awarded the Bronze Star by Col. H J Preble for meritorious service in the European Theater of Operations from 6 June 1944 to 14 July 1944. The citation praises his skill and courage as an ammunition handler during the invasion of western Europe.
Sidney is slated for inclusion in the Omaha World Herald weekly series on Nebraska communities. Secretary Gordon Tobin filed a request, hoping Eldon Lengevin will visit Sidney next week to cover progress with words and pictures for the panhandle feature.

More than forty farmers and grain dealers predict the first new wheat in the Nebraska panhandle next week possibly by July 10 with peak activity between July 5 and 20. Harvest needs 725 outside combines and 1175 field workers, but machinery and repair parts are scarce due to factory stoppages.
Dr George P Taylor of Sidney has been chosen as an alternate delegate to the American Osteopathic Association House of Delegates for the fiftyeth annual convention at the Waldorf Astoria New York July 14 to 19 He will represent the Nebraska Osteopathic Association The delegates will tackle national health insurance care of disabled veterans rural health service and a program to expand the profession's public service through cooperation with state and other health agencies
Richard H. Moeller will hold a public sale at his farm fourteen miles east and one mile south of Dallin next Tuesday at one o'clock. He is retiring from the Weyerts community and offers farm machinery miscellaneous and household goods. Col. A. B. Rapp will handle the sale.
Ern est Stimka, 40, shot his wife Bertha Stimka last Sunday and then turned the gun on himself. Both were alive but seriously injured. county officials delayed filing charges pending Mrs Stimka’s condition and potential jail transfer.
The City of Sidney adopted a new garbage ordinance effective July 1 placing collection under the board of health and creating the waste department to supervise pickup. Residential fees are $1.00 monthly, payable with water bills. use is optional and disposal can be done by residents or via the waste department.
The chamber of commerce urged continued effort toward acquiring a 480 acre tract south of town for a municipal airport. Bond issuance was delayed until Congress authorized the Civil Aeronautics Authority to use federal funds. A condemnation board will set land value and trigger a special election for general obligation bonds. Landowners favor a fair figure if the land becomes an airport, and state grants may help develop the field with reveling. After runways and buildings, much of the land could be leased to farmers for grain production with CAA approval if grain is fifty years from the runway.
Gurley Oil Co has taken on the Skelly franchise for petroleum products and is operating from a new bulk plant. The company offers a full line of fuels oils and greases and provides prompt tank wagon service. Telephone 5036 through the Gurley exchange. Spokesmen noted additional Skelly lines may be added later.
Bonnie Planck has purchased the Haines Cafe at 826 10th Avenue and will reopen it as Pioneer Cafe. The new owner closed the site for remodeling and cleaning, with 24 hour service planned. Mr Haines will stay in Sidney and pursue other ventures.
The county fair board plans August resumption and reconditioning of buildings for the 1946 event. Through the chamber of commerce it requests Sidney businesses close three afternoons during the fair. The last three days would honor Dalton Gurley Potter and Lodgepole Sund communities.
A pressure cooker clinic will be held Tuesday July 9 at 1 30 P M in the dining room of the auditorium in Sidney. All users are urged to attend as gauges should be tested yearly and safety parts kept clean. Mary Burbank home agent will discuss use and care and W P Bullock county agent will help test gauges. Bring lid old pie tin cup and old rags and wear a wash dress.
Joseph Robert Brown, 60, former resident of Sidney, died at his ranch near Meridian Wyoming last Friday. Funeral services were held at Pine Bluffs today at two o'clock. Brown lived in Wyoming seventeen years, earlier in Sidney. Survived by Milford Brown of Boulder City Nevada. Mrs. Margaret Proctor of Denver. Mildred Brown of Salt Lake City. Mrs. Merna Smith of Sidney.

The American Legion marks its first anniversary with an open house on Monday July 8 at 93914 Illinois street. Free drinks and bingo with cash prizes, four door prize drawings at 4, 9, 10, and 11 pm, and royal entertainment for the public. Proceeds go toward a new club building planned at Tenth avenue and Linden street. current site supports veterans and families. Committee members include Dr. R. E. Roche, C. B. Bentley, Herschel Spearow, William Harte, Ed Runge, Wayne Ayres, John Spence, Charles Dalton and Bill Robinson.
Prominent Peetz resident Harry Abram Lockhart died June 30, three days after hospitalization in Denver. A 62 year old homesteader, he helped found local farmers groups and served on multiple community boards. Born 1883 in Kansas, he moved to Cheyenne in 1904 and to his Peetz homestead in 1910. He married Agnes Nelson in 1908 and is survived by his wife, four sons Russell Hilton Kendall Melven, two daughters Virginia Wagner and Carle Raddatz.
Free swimming lessons for all ages from five years up will begin at the municipal pool on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays mornings under the supervision of regular pool attendants. The pool will also be open evenings until nine o'clock until further notice.
