Geese Increase Wintering in Panhandle Nebraska
A Fish and Wildlife Service Nebraska Game Commission survey finds 5879 Canada geese wintering statewide against 2423 last year while mallards total about 190000 versus 277000 in 1960. Most geese favor North Platte River areas and Lake McConaughy with smaller flocks at Garden County refuge and Harlan Reservoir. Intermittent openings exist along Platte channels as frozen water limits feeding. The oyster drill sea snail bores oyster shells with a rasplike tongue to suck nutrients.
