The Sidney Telegraph surveys the Black Hills region noting 350 placer mines and 108 quartz veins, with $7,000,000 mined last year and $1,800,000 in labor costs. It describes the geography, drainage, and formations, plus new discoveries near Custer City and forecasts mass emigration and booming timber, coal, iron, and gypsum resources.
In the last week three practical men visited Sidney to study smelting feasibility. They believe works could be built in early spring and ore from Custer City Rapid City and Deadwood could be hauled to Sidney cheaper than moving machinery into the Hills. Gold dust shipments from Sidney this week reached $8,822.
The city editor of the Omaha Herald extols a Western Nebraska farmers experiment crossing buffalo bulls with American cows. It claims one or two wild calves per herd, hardy half and quarter breeds, and higher milk yields. The piece jokingly notes skepticism and promises the experiment may endure in domestic stock.
Henry Weld of near Camp Clarke on the North Platte suffered ten days of severe stomach pain. A Sidney physician used emetics and a stomach pump to extract a live yellowish lizard about three inches long. Weld recalled drinking from a spring at night and occasionally bending to drink, but does not remember swallowing a lizard. He expressed relief after the extraction.
Pratt and Ferris dispatched another train to the Agencies on Thursday. The Denver Tribune denies the death report of horseman Joseph Corberry and notes the faithful dog guarding his body. Laramie Chronicle reports city authorities in Cheyenne preparing defenses against an epidemic.
