Cities Seek Tax Sharing Plan Endorsed by Nebraska Municipalities
The Nebraska League of Municipalities large cities section endorsed a bill to rebate 10 percent of state sales and income taxes to local subdivisions. Sidney's George Felsch warned of a $26,000 loss from property tax repeal, urging state-level funding. Grand Island's John Carpenter urged caution, favoring consideration for cities and counties in replacing the abolished property tax. The plan would split rebates 50 50 by population and valuation, with 80 percent of population-based funds to municipalities and 20 percent to county general funds. The group also backed a new annexation bill addressing the State Supreme Court ruling on first class city annexation and opposed federal aid grant approvals by the state.
