Leasing Up At Kimball County Oil Leases Grow
The Western Nebraska Observer notes rapid leasing of land in Kimball County with about 400000 acres under lease. Stanolind leads with 56000 acres in the north, plus large holdings in Banner county and eastern Wyoming. The firm may drill a test well next summer. Wind Erases Soil as Gales Sweep Nebraska Panhandle
No blizzard arrived over the weekend as forecasts predicted. Strong winds and gusts carved away topsoil across droughty ground in the Nebraska Panhandle, with visibility near zero in rural areas. Sidney reported dirt piling on streets and entering homes and businesses. Sunday brought a fierce gale at 52 mph with cold temperatures from 4 to 24 degrees. Conservationist Lee Girardot blamed poor erosion control and moisture scarcity, noting that farms with protective measures fared better. Irrigation and dry land farmers used residue and other practices to protect the land for fall. Blizzard targets shifted north to South Dakota and Minnesota, while Nebraska saw a wide temperature spread from 13 degrees below zero in Chadron to 35 in Hayes Center.

Oshkosh Car Wrecked Near Viaduct Sunday
A 1949 Dodge owned by Harlan Dormann of Oshkosh was damaged in a Sunday morning crash at about 12:30 near the east end of the viaduct east of Sidney. Damages were $400. All five occupants escaped injury. Otto J. Dormann, Harlan’s brother, drove the car on the way home from Gurley after a dance when a turn failed. The vehicle struck posts, went down the abutment, and overturned.

Extension Council Plans 1950 Program
Miss Ethel Saxton Lincoln district supervisor for the state extension service conferred with officers of the Cheyenne County Extension Council Thursday and helped plan the county extension program for the year. State Labor Supply Up in Nebraska Unemployment Rise Report
Nebraska's unemployment count has been rising since October with a sharp December increase, Labor Commissioner Donald P. Miller reported. On January 1, 1950, 12,555 Nebraskans had work applications on file, up 3,629 from the previous month and 3,500 more than a year ago, driven by layoffs in construction and food and grain processing industries. Miller noted isolated reductions in durable goods manufacturing but not a broad downward trend. He also cited more unemployment insurance claims as another sign of rising joblessness. December saw 4,267 weekly checks on average, up from 2,188 in November and 1,828 in October, as labor demand remained very light with only 2,486 openings in December and 726 unfilled listings at month end.
