Cattle prices stay weak in early January market

Washington AP report notes USDA livestock data show cattle prices well below last year. Average price for choice grade steers at Midwestern markets week ended Jan 4 was 35.65 per 100 pounds, down from 36.34 the prior week and 42.45 a year earlier. Producers marketing lighter-weight cattle.

Property crimes rise in Sidney in 1974 chief reports

Police Chief Roy Bauer reports 1974 saw 501 property related crimes in Sidney, up slightly from 498 in 1973, with larger rises in larceny over $100 and under $100, destruction of property, and commercial breaking and entering. Personal crimes fell in several categories while arrests and recoveries increased.

Snowy weekend snarls Nebraska roads and schools

Snow fell across eastern Nebraska as a northwest storm moved out. Many schools including Omaha public schools canceled while Offutt Air Force Base advised staying home unless assigned. Temperatures plunged with Chadron reporting eight below zero and western highs in the teens. A travelers advisory warned of three inches or more of snow in the east as cold and windy conditions persisted.

County appoints Tedesco as interim county attorney

Cheyenne County Commissioners hire Sidney Don Tedesco to continue as county attorney on a month to month basis until a successor is named. The former prosecutor did not run in November and will maintain a private practice while serving, with a $1500 monthly salary and $200 office rent, plus other expenses, and is to be available around July for a permanent appointment.

Moisture under year average in Sidney area in 1974

Weather data from the Nation Weather Service and High Plains Lab show Sidney area moisture for 1974 at 11.19 inches, well below the 17.55 inch normal. December contributed 0.13 inch but wind-blown snow may have underestimated totals, with local officials predicting dry conditions hurting winter wheat and spring crops.
