Water Woes Dwell on Town Board Plans for Deepening Well
The village board held meetings this week to address the underperforming water supply. Engineer Hershey Welch notes the uncompleted well cannot yield enough water, while Des Moines Bridge and Iron Construction Company prepares to resume digging with a steam shovel. The well sits at 31 feet 8 inches with about three feet of water, and trustees aim to reach forty feet or more to strike a better vein of water. A plan to let water users recoup six months of water rents paid to the Union Pacific is considered, shifting extra costs to contractors and taxpayers. Preserve receipts from the railroad.

State aid to weak districts shows small early allocations
The school law distributing state aid to weak districts in Cheyenne and Morrill counties is in its infancy. Cheyenne county’s eleven districts shared 489 dollars of the needed 5,000 while Morrill county’s nineteen districts received 847 dollars of the 7,000 required. The article argues for continued and scaled funding, supporting rural districts and eighth grade education, with potential future reallocations to normal schools and the university.
