Building permits in Sidney near yearlong average
Building permit records show Sidney spent close to $75,000 on construction in 1931, with estimates possibly understated. Major projects included a $12,000 Western Public Service power house addition, a $10,500 Presbyterian church, and a $10,000 residence, totaling a near $80,000 project cost with many small builds and several garages, pumps, a greenhouse, two warehouses, and a balcony fire escape. Seventeen new homes averaged just over $2,000 each, keeping overall activity at an average level despite fewer large projects.

January Chest Pledges Not Needed Now Fund Is In Excellent Condition
Sidney community chest directors decided Monday night that the January installment of pledges would not be necessary due to light December demand. Official reports showed the drain on funds was well below estimates thanks to moderate weather and office manager J. W. Goodale. About $2,000 remained on hand and only $189.86 was spent from December 8 to 28, with coal donations largely allocated. The chest assisted twenty five families directly and two families needed medical service. Snow removal work provided jobs for idle men, and the plan may be reduced from five pledges to four, possibly over five months, if demand stays low.
