Medical malpractice reform eyed for Nebraska
Dr C J Cornelius urged action on soaring medical malpractice insurance costs affecting rural Nebraska and Sidney. He cited insurer shifts from occurrence to claims made, retirement premiums, and a 10 fold premium rise. A 1976 reform bill would create a medical review panel, a physician complaints commission, and shorten the statute of limitations. Cause of accident at Leprino Cheese plant remains unknown
Rick Vogt, 28, of Chappell, remained hospitalized in Scottsbluff after a cream separator disintegrated at the Leprino Cheese Mfg. Co. plant. Plant manager Ruben Vogt said the injuries include deep back and side lacerations, two broken arms, possible internal injuries, with the machine turning about 6,000 rpm and handling 30,000 pounds of cream per hour. The plant will stay closed until early next week as investigators seek the cause. Ralph Herrera of Sidney was treated and released. Pieces breached walls and a roof, cutting water and steam lines. a metal chunk traveled 60 feet from the impact.

The Associated Press reports Nebraska faced a brutal deep freeze with 23 below at Chadron and about 60 below zero wind chills in Omaha Lincoln Norfolk and Grand Island. Roads iced by drifting snow forced several closures in northeastern and west central areas as Arctic high pressure blankets the state. Tonight could drop to five to 15 below with a risk of light flurries in the far west. Highs Thursday are expected near 10 to 15 in the west and 5 to 10 above elsewhere.
