Stubble Mulching Protects Wheat Crop In Windy Plains
Louis Daigger, Area Extension Specialist, notes winter wheat fields with surface residues resist erosion from recent winds. About 1,500 pounds of residue per acre protects medium textured soil, with more needed on sandy soils. Stubble mulch helps conserve soil moisture and raises fallow efficiency from 10 to 30 percent, but requires commitment to leave residues on the surface and to anchor them during fallow.
