Western Nebraska wrestlers shine as Gordon Broncs clinch the B-4 district and claim the 1971 State Class B championship. The Gordon squad dominates the mat with a decisive performance while Sidney High and other eastern foes struggle to keep pace.
Sidney High dominates Western Conference at the 1971 state Class B wrestling meet. Kyle Abrams Dick Peetz Rod Hecker Kyle Abrams won 105 and joined two-time champions. Rod Hecker captured 132. Dick Peetz claimed 185 with a 34-0 season, while Brent Abrams earned 112. Gordon and Gering also produced champions as the Raiders end a coaching era.
The district tournament kicks off with Potter vs Dix at 6 15 p.m. and Lewellen vs Bushnell at 8 p.m. tonight in Sidney Junior High Auditorium. Eight teams vie for a shot at regional play, led by the Sidney St Patrick's Irish who average 74 points per game and seek the title.
Sidney St Patrick’s Irish exploded for 107 points to rout Dix Panthers 107 to 74 closing regular season with a 14-4 mark. Gary Schwartz poured in 28 while Jim Morris added 26. Dennis Tobler led Dix with 33 as St Patrick’s pulled away after a 31-14 first quarter and tallied 32 in the fourth.
