Banks in Cheyenne County will close Saturday for Washington's Birthday. post offices observe the holiday with no mail deliveries in Sidney. Courthouse and Sidney offices are closed Saturdays, Sioux Army Depot suspends work today per Defense Department policy. retailers mostly observe the holiday and Feb 22 is not a holiday.

Elks and Ladies to Gather for Intercity Meeting

More than 200 Elks and wives from Chadron Alliance Scottsbluff and Ogallala will convene in Sidney this weekend. Initiation at 10:30 Sunday marks the highlight led by Chadron Lodge. Registration opens 4:00 Saturday in the club lounge with a hospitality hour 5 to 7 and a nine o'clock dance in the Elks auditorium. Sunday features Elks and ladies breakfasts at nine, initiation, and a smorgasbord from 12:30 to 3:30 in the Elks dining room.

Sludge Fire at Gas Plant Sparks Power Line Damage

A sludge fire at the Huntsman Gas Plant Thursday morning caused heat damage to a 115,000 volt aluminum power line with a steel core. Firefighters reported sludge breached a pit wall, ignited, and spread flames toward the line, requiring 50 gallons of foam and mutual aid from several departments. The fire burned about three hours and affected the line serving Bridgeport and Gering.
