Sterling and its irrigation prospects in the South Platte valley
A fragmented early account describes Sterling as a valley settlement south of Sidney with a 25 foot wide main ditch and a fenced irrigation system. It notes 11,000 acres of fertile land under ditch and fence, water rights for 160 acres at $100, and incentives: free five or more acres plus water for a season, plus two years of free land use for prospective settlers. Outside the fence, good stock range and abundant crops are reported, with Meeker of the Greeley Tribune comparing land quality to Colorado.
