Panhandle study targets post high school education options
The Nebraska Panhandle study led by Chadron State College aims to extend educational opportunities beyond high school. Meetings in Alliance, Valentine, Gordon, Scottsbluff, Chadron, and Sidney identified community resources and needs with officials from Western Nebraska Vocational Tech and the state education department. Gary Bieganski will direct the project as the first program is planned to begin, expanding vocational and occupational training in western Nebraska.

The Nebras ka Department of Labor reports January job seekers in Sidney rose to 208 from 187 in December, with initial claims up about 10 percent versus last year driven largely by construction. Continued unemployment insurance claims also increased. weather improvements are expected to ease the trend. Western Plains Regional Library reports 11,879 total checkouts in January across Cheyenne and Kimball counties including Sidney 4250 and several bookmobiles. The month saw 1,964 adult non fiction, 2,500 adult fiction, 1,494 juvenile non fiction, 5,523 juvenile fiction, and 398 periodicals checked out.
