Runge Adopts Conservation Plan For Farm Progress
Francis Runge and family 14 miles west and 3 south of Sidney transformed a tenant farm into a model conservation operation. The 640 acre layout includes 100 irrigated acres and 469 dry cropland with terraces, water control, windbreaks, and planned grass seeding. Work funded by Soil Conservation Service, ACP, and Great Plains contracts, to be completed by 1961.

Liming Acid Soils Pays Big Dividends In Many Ways
Extension agronomist Clinton Hoover explains lime benefits beyond pH. Lime increases availability of phosphorus magnesium and other nutrients reducing fertilizer needs, speeds organic matter decay, and boosts nitrogen release. It aids legumes by supplying calcium and boosting nitrogen fixation, raises forage yields, and improves stand quality. Lime enhances soil structure, moisture intake, aeration, and reduces wash. Finer lime reacts faster due to greater surface area, though effectiveness depends on soil test guidance and Nebraska conditions.

Lime effectiveness and timing in soil management
The guidance explains lime effectiveness lasts five to seven years with good mixing, that ultra fine lime reacts faster but leaches slowly mainly on acidic soils, and overliming can cause nutrient deficiencies. It notes purity affects neutralizing power, and recommends uniform soil incorporation and soil testing for timing and need.
