Sidneys Maroons defeated Gering 71 69 on the road to clinch the Alliance Western Conference title. Kent Pearson hit a last second jumping shot to seal the win after a 69 69 tie with 21 seconds left.
Broken Bow traveled 200 miles and defeated Sidney 55-38 as the Maroons struggled with defense and shooting. Sidney led early but Broken Bow surged in the second quarter and cruised to the win behind Hircock and McCloughan, while Samson led Sidney with 13 points.
Regional games yielded a mix of close and decisive results. Notable wins included Dix over Broadwater 65 46 and Minatare over Lyman 76 65 while others saw Cobble tallies like Holdrege 69 Cpallala 63 and Bridgeport 48 Kimball 49.
St Pat’s 7th 8th graders lost the Invitational final 22-21 to Sterling as a late cold spell surrendered a 16-10 halftime lead. Jim Kathoff scored nine and John Miller 11 for St Pat’s while Sterling’s top scorers included 15 from Joe Beyer and 10 from Pat Dalton. St Pat’s earlier beat Niff 37-22 in the semifinals before advancing to the final set.
Wednesday schedule for the Church League leads to a February 17 tournament. Junior high games include Schubert's Methodists versus Nazarene's at 6:30, Grace Baptists against Con ger Methodists at 7:30, and Christaluthalians versus Peetz at 8:30. Tournament to be a double round robin with nine teams expected. rosters and entry fees due to Tom Jones before Monday night.
Sunol’s John Allen scored 20 points and sparked a second half surge to lift Sunol over Bushnell 48 to 38 in Lodgepole Valley Conference action. Bushnell’s Jerry Stuckert led with 14 points as Sunol pulled away after halftime.
Four Sidney Elks boxers claimed titles at the Scottsbluff Elks Golden Gloves tourney. Ford Hernandez won a fifth Class A welter title by default, Arch Hernandez earned his fourth title at middleweight, while Larry Jepson of Sioux Ord Depot stunned rivals to take the Class B middleweight crown. Grothe of Potter also won Class B heavyweight by default. Sidney finished 4–0 in finals and plans to travel to Omaha for the Midwest AAU tournament.
Scottsbluff and Sidney prepare for a junior high gym showdown as Bearcats visit. Scottsbluff, 5 5, features top scorer Galen Schwaner while Sidney relies on Mike Fisher backcourt firepower in a heated regional tilt following recent splits with North Platte and Alliance.
Potter's Coyotes upset Dalton 40-39 on their home court in Lodgepole Valley Conference play. After trailing 24-15 at halftime, Potter used an 18 point third period to move ahead 35-29 and held on. Ward Larsen scored the winning basket after a 38-38 tie with 14 minutes left. Larsen 10, Hayworth 8, Musil 7, Meester 6, Meyer 6 led Potter. Lessman 15 and McRoberts 13 led Dalton.
Torrington's high school wrestling team edged Sidney 24 to 22 Friday. The Maroons won four bouts and drew four, with a late pin giving Torrington the edge. Notable results include Harold Irwin pinning Big Ear in 3:07 and Gordon Printz defeating Rex Clothier 5-2. Friday they host a 10 team district qualifying tournament for state championships.
Dix Panthers built a 35-15 halftime lead and rolled to a 65-46 Lodgepole Valley Conference Class B win over Broadwater. Bob Biesecker led Dix with 15 points while Elvin Stewart topped Broadwater with 21.
