Seventeen head of cattle escaped harm Friday as a 1959 model truck skidded, overturned in a ditch on U S Highway 26 about three and a half miles east of Broadwater. Driver Gus Troester of Hampton Neb incurred $700 in damages per the Safety Patrol.
Sidney teachers famed for high certification urge school board to add a professionalism policy for hiring. The Sidney Educators Club asks that membership in professional organizations be evidence of professionalism and that administration clarify policy before contracts with teachers. Arven Reynolds, president, says the move maintains a professional faculty.
Residents are invited to join a Cancer Society session tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Room. Mrs. P. J. Heaton, acting chairman, says volunteers need not be Hospital Auxiliary members to help with making cancer pads.
State land no. 1 well at NW Sec 36-16-51 plugged by King Oil Co of Denver after coring J sand thirteen miles west of Gurley. Several new locations in Kimball Banner and Banner counties with multiple wildcat prospects. drilling in Cheyenne County stalled while Murfin Field near Potter shows no start for two weeks.
Wheat priced at 1.60 dollars per bushel by local elevator sources today.
Norton of Boy's Town urged Sidney Catholics at Bishop Hunkeler Assembly installation to be worthy members of the Knights of Columbus. He cited fraternal aid to members and beneficiaries and mutual aid for the sick and needy, noting the group's charitable and educational works. Officers installed were Arthur Lenzen, William Gray, Claude Campbell, and King Lybarger, all of Sidney.
Clara Merck, lifelong community helper and self taught musician, began painting at an advanced age using house paint and cardboard as a canvas. Inspired by her son Ozzie and Christmas gifts of oil paints, she created imaginative desert scenes without formal lessons. Her husband Joe Meick died in 1950, and she continues to teach music in Sidney, now adding scenic art to her life.
The premier showing of the new Case 1000 combine is planned for Wednesday at Miller Implement Co in Sidney. An open house will feature comparisons on colored slides at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Alvin Miller and Harold O’Connor invite farmers to attend. Free coffee and doughnuts will be served.
The Cheyenne County groundhog saw its shadow this morning as temperatures dipped to one below zero at Sidney airport. By nine a.m. readings rose to around ten above, with a light snowfall and statewide cold, dry conditions expected through Tuesday. Nebraskan Panhandle residents face two to four inches of snow cover and minimal wind drift, while main highways remain clear. A 50 year old grocery ad token gimmick by C. W. Hornaday remains valid. Ten cent tokens collected during the Mothers March of Dimes event were redeemed by Hornaday who now works in furniture and used equipment. He will honor them for cash or merchandise.
Sidney Rotarians completed the Mothers March of Dimes with 14 participants raising 686.58 dollars in frigid weather. Three areas were left unassigned for Tuesday canvassing led by Mrs W J Robinson and Boy and Girl Scouts. County chairman P J Heaton praised the results, noting they should boost polio campaign totals.
The auction at Ft Sidney Motor Hotel Saturday, held by The Sidney Community Hotel Corp against Chester H. Johnson, brought $4,925. The sale featured usable hotel merchandise. Sheriff W. W. Schulz and deputies Kermit Brumbaugh and Gene Morris conducted it under court orders. Funds are being turned over to the court for disposition.

In Sidney a ranchman and his wife stayed at the Pacific hotel. At 4am the husband suffered cramps and requested a mustard plaster. The wife, searching for muslin, mistakenly applied the plaster to Hon. Albert Cahn of Omaha in a different room. Cahn laughed off the mishap, while the couple resolved to remember room numbers for future incidents.
