Local youths face felony charges after undercover drug probe

A month long undercover operation in Sidney led to pending felony charges against five youths for sale of marijuana and hard drugs. Iowa narcotics agents worked with Cheyenne County Attorney Don Tedesco, buying LSD, hashish, mescaline, and marijuana from local youths, with drugs sent to Lincoln for tests. Arrests and arraignments are planned after drugs were turned over to Sheriff Kermit Brumbaugh for analysis.

Sidney street head Patt Wright dies at 63

Sidney street superintendent Patt Wright died suddenly on Christmas morning at his trailer home in west Sidney from a heart attack. He was rushed to Memorial Hospital and died an hour later. Funeral services were held at Gehrig and Son and his remains sent to Omaha for further services. Wright, born January 13, 1907 in Pine Island Minnesota, had worked 25 years for Inland Construction and three years with the Sidney street department. Surviving are his widow Gladys and a brother William of Salt Lake City.

The library closes at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and is closed all day Friday January 1. Regular hours return 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Sunday hours include special access for college students from 1 to 5 p.m.

Warm spell to persist with dry skies into New Year

Temperatures rise since Christmas and stay balmy and dry through New Year. FAA flight service station logs show only .91 inch of moisture since last Wednesday, mainly a light snowfall on Thursday. Temps range from 8 to 27 on Wednesday, 1 to 34 on Thursday, 0 to 34 Friday, 9 to 40 Saturday, 5 to 42 Sunday, and 11 to 38 Monday.

Christensen Rites To Be Wednesday

Wilbert N. Christensen of Lodgepole died Sunday after four months as a patient. Funeral services will be at the United Methodist Church in Lodgepole at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Harold Backus and Capt. Don Christensen officiating. Interment is in Pleasant View Cemetery. The Holeciek Funeral Home is in charge. Christensen was born March 26, 1901, and married Freda A. Sick in 1926. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and AF&AM Golden Red Lodge 306. Surviving are his widow, two sons, a daughter, a brother, two sisters and 10 grandchildren.

Three Mishaps Are Reported Over Weekend

Sidney police logged three weekend accidents amid icy streets. Robert Young and Curtis Alexander collided on 19th Avenue and Cedar Street. both blamed snow packed streets. H L McHatton backed into Raoul Nelson’s car on Illinois Street with no damage to McHatton. Robert Hartman was hit by Vincent Beyer on 19th Avenue after Beyer slid over the centerline. Hartman’s car sustained 40 in damage.

Bill Eddy Receives Army Assignment at Ft Huachuca

Second Lieutenant William P Eddy has been assigned to the command information staff at Ft Huachuca Arizona serving in the public affairs office. He will coordinate information activities for the Army internal audience and work closely with STRATCOM headquartered at the installation. Eddy a Sidney Beatrice Grand Island Nebraska native and 1964 Sidney High School graduate earned a DINFOS distinguished award and previously completed basic and infantry officer courses at Ft Benning. He holds a BS in journalism and secondary education from the University of Nebraska and taught journalism at Beatrice High School before active duty.

Inflation Eases in November With Slower CPI Rise

The government reports November prices rose 0.3 percent, a slowdown from October. The CPI stands at 137.8 percent of the 1957 59 average, with average weekly earnings at 121.07 and purchasing power down 1.8 percent from a year earlier. Grocery prices fell 0.7 percent while clothing housing cars and services rose.
