Economists forecast brighter farm prospects for 1935 if weather normalizes. Prices may rise across commodities, surpluses shrink except cotton, and AAA adjusted production expand. Farm income should improve though not as much as 1933–34, with better purchasing power and easier credit, barring drought repeats.
The Fox theatre hosts its annual New Year Eve jamboree next Monday at 11 30 p m with a preview film and vaudeville acts. The picture Babbitt stars Guy Kibbee and Aline McMahon, while Manager Harold Jones arranged snappy stage acts and festive noise makers for the celebration.
The upcoming census of agriculture in Nebraska and nationwide will cover major farming interests but will ask only about one third as many questions as the 1930 decennial census. Officials emphasize the Schedule focuses on essential data for farmers and agriculture policy.

The remaining stock of the John son Drug company was packed and shipped yesterday to M. E. Rasdal at Ogallala. Rasdal has been part owner since the store’s purchase from Bassett brothers and assisted with the closing out sale last week. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson plan to leave Sidney soon, undecided on their future settlement.
A Christmas day noted for clear cold weather and no heavy snow in Sidney and western Nebraska. Families gathered for dinners and visits while Tom and Jerry led friendly gatherings and a large night dance. President Roosevelt attended a Christmas church service as the nation united in a joyful holiday.
Attorney General Paul F. Good proposes a four point campaign against crime in his biennial report to the governor. He plans an enlarged state sheriff's staff and a group of district attorneys, arguing for higher salaries and a new system while retiring January 3.
The county commissioners schedule three meetings over one week starting Wednesday January 2. The old board meets to close 1934 business, January 3 the new board organizes and swears in officers, and January 9 the board holds its regular semi monthly session.
New top prices were paid for both hogs and cattle on the South Omaha market Wednesday. Hogs sold up to 6.85 dollars, an increase of 25 to 50 cents, the highest price here since 1932. Sheep rose 50 to 75 cents to a top of 8.85 dollars, compared with 8.10 dollars on Monday.
Reverend J. J. Sheaff thanked Epworth Methodist church members in Lincoln for eight years of loyalty and service. He departs for Sidney December 30 to begin a new pastorate, urging support for his successor Roy Blough of Wisner and noting Epworth’s duty to agricultural college students. The transfer concludes with the church auditorium full for the farewell.
Rev. Mills and his wife Charling Mills and their two children left Sidney as he accepted a call to Wayne Methodist church. He preached a farewell sermon to a capacity Sidney congregation last Sunday praising local parishioners and royal workers who aided during his pastorate.
L D Willey, longtime Cheyenne county agent, will begin a one year leave on January 1 to lead extension and agricultural adjustment work across 13 western Nebraska counties from Sid ney. J C Swinbank of Harrison will replace him, bringing extensive county agent experience to the Panhandle program.
Cheyenne county farmers, facing a feed shortage, sold 111 distressed cattle at the Burlington stock yards in an emergency drought sale on Wednesday. County Agent Willey said the sale exhausts the current appropriation and no further dates are likely unless Congress allocates funds. Buyers numbered 41, with prices higher than expected and brisk bidding. few farmers face immediate starvation.
Sidney fans may watch Rocky Mountain Conference clash as Colorado School of Mines faces Wenoco Oilers at eight in the auditorium. Mines, once weak in the standings, seeks a renewed threat with a veterans lineup while the Oilers push an improving offense, aiming to tame the locals.
County Treasurer Louis Wasem reminds taxpayers real estate taxes are due January 1 with first half delinquent March 1 and second half August 1. If unpaid by March 1 the full amount becomes delinquent with seven percent annual interest. delinquent real estate is advertised in October and sold in November, with nine percent annual interest thereafter. He notes payments are ahead of last year and expects a smaller delinquent list next fall.
The Chamber of Commerce will elect officers for 1935 and discuss changes to boost interest and participation among downtown retailers. Retiring officers include President Jack H. Lowe and others. The group weighs replacing luncheons with evening meetings and a sliding dues scale tied to perceived benefits.
Western Nebraska faces a severe cold snap with forecasts of snow and single digit wind chills. Officials warned stockmen to protect livestock as a broader cold wave sweeps the north and northwest, despite skeptical readings and fluctuating daily forecasts this week.
A model crow trap, reduced in sig2, has been received by State Game Warden O Connell who will share plans. Nebraska counties offer a 5 cent bounty for crows. The full sized trap is taller than a man, with a wooden frame, woven wire, and a downward sloping roof with a long slot to trap crows. Corn bait inside lures crows through the top openings.
The Boy Scout board of reviews met with L. D. Willey in charge and passed on advancements and merit badge awards to local scouts. Mickey Green and Walden Nelson received advancements. Merit badges awarded include third study to Walter Fuller and Robert Robinson, farm mechanics to Walter Fuller, life saving to Duane Green, personal health to Walden Nelson, and leather craft to Walden Nelson.
Christmas business in Sidney ran about fifty per cent above last year with stores noting a strong buying spirit. Estimates ranged ten to one hundred per cent, groceries and general merchandise showing solid gains while Railway Express handled about thirty per cent more packages. Post office figures echoed the uptick as merchants express optimism for the new year.
H. E. Mantor of Broadwater bound over at Sidney on 500 bond to appear in federal court, per State Game Warden O Connell. V. Polichy of Breadwater fined 25 for pheasant possession. Glen Preston of Columbus fined 10 for buying furs without an annual permit.
Wesley Smith of Pontiac Michigan, a hitch hiker arrested earlier this week for stealing a bicycle belonging to Almont Kendrie, remains in the county jail awaiting formal charges. Sheriff W. W. Schulz said the complaint would be served soon, delayed by the Christmas holiday.
St Patrick’s academy alumni held their annual banquet and reunion in the academy auditorium. Nearly two hundred former graduates were expected to attend. A speaking and social program complemented the banquet with Rev Anton Link listed as a main speaker alongside alumni members.
Rowland Haynes, relief administrator for Nebraska, announces redistricting into nine districts to centralize FERA divisions. Headquarters will be in Lincoln Districts 2 and 4, Norfolk District 3, Columbus District 4, Hastings District 5, Kearney District 6, Ainsworth District 7, North Platte District 8, and Scottsbluff District 9. District 9 counties include Sioux, Dawes, Sheridan, Box Butte, Morrill, Garden, Banner, Kimball, Cheyenne, and Deuel.
N. W. Ladegard secretary of the school board said no definite meeting date has been set to name a successor for J. C. Rosse who resigned as principal to become manager of a local newspaper. A special meeting will probably be called very soon to fill the vacancy.
