Christmas Trailer Fire Destroys Clapp Home in Sidney

Uninsured trailer at Porter Trailer Court burned early Saturday injuring Harold Clapp and leaving his two sons Ronnie and Steve homeless. Fire Chief Dan Benzel attributed the blaze to a damaged drop cord near a heater. A clothing drive organized by the Firemen's Auxiliary and Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce seeks donations to aid the family.

Depots to Close as UP Plans Mobile Agency

At a Friday Lincoln hearing the Nebraska Railway Commission approved Union Pacifics plan to close three Panhandle depots along the main line and replace them with a Kimball mobile agency. Potter Dix and Bushnell depots will be replaced after year end, marking Nebraskas first mobile agency on the line. The move may set a precedent for further consolidation and affect local agents Talbott at Bushnell, Levecerth at Kimball, and Del Lam at Potter.

Cheyenne County reports an island of good weather while Scottsbluff and North Platte faced fog and poor visibility. Five inches of snow with 0.3 inches moisture fell Friday. temperatures ranged from -5 to 36 over the weekend and into today as sun melts lingering snow.

St Patrick's School to drop six grades statewide impact

At Western Plains Auction Co. Sidney calves were weaker while yearlings rose with steers to 38 dollars and heifers to 36 50. Cows reached 19 20 and yearling heifers 29. Hog volume was light as the firm pauses until Jan 9 1971 with a Jan 10 horse sale planned. About 600 head expected for the January sale amid renewed calf demand.

Former Gurley Resident Dies in Julesburg

Vernon Groshans 39, native of Gurley, was found dead Sunday in a Julesburg garage, apparently from asphyxiation. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Julesburg. burial in Julesburg Cemetery. Austin Mortuary in charge. Groshans son of late John and Mrs. Groshans of Gurley. He moved to Julesburg 12 years ago with Foster Lumber Co and later worked at a service station. A longer obituary will follow.

Alliance Jailbreakers Nabbed Near Sidney

Four male inmates and a female accomplice escaped from Box Butte County jail in Alliance using a hacksaw. They were captured near Sidney after a high speed chase led by State Trooper Jack Robinson on Highway 385. Accused include Titus Blair Davis Flowers and accomplice Connie Davis. The woman faces aiding and abetting charges. the men were jailed in Alliance for armed robbery larceny and burglary.

Sidney Leads Nebraska In October Retail Activity

Nebraska October retail sales rose 18 percent from 1969 levels despite declines in several hard goods. Sidney led with a 13.2 percent rise in general business activity, followed by North Platte and Hastings, while Omaha and Lincoln showed smaller gains or declines. Other city indexes ranged from gains in Kearney and Alliance to declines in Columbus and Scottsbluff.

Semi Slides on Snowy Highway 385 Near Sidney

State Trooper Ken State reports a noon accident on Highway 385 one mile north of Sidney involving a 1964 International truck-trailer driven by 23 year old Robert W. Teall of Sidney. The rig skidded on packed snow, jackkn ifed, and lay in a private driveway with $2,000 damage and no injuries.
