The new parcels post limits weights to eleven pounds and uses an eight zone system from Sidney. Short distance perishable items and local eye packing may travel. fresh meats only in the first zone. Prohibited items include intoxicants poisons matches explosives firearms and live poultry. Rates start at five cents for the first pound in the Sidney first zone with increasing per zone.
The Swedish dialect comedy Ole Olson in Spiritland appears at Tobin Opera House on Saturday December 28. The show features four acts with humor and a strong supporting company plus musical and vaudeville numbers. Regular prices apply and reserved seats are on sale.

At a Sidney meeting on December 14th officers for the Western Nebraska Basket Ball League were chosen. President J D McMillan of Sidney and Secretary S L Clements of Alliance were elected. Mrs. H. G. Hall hosted a Saturday afternoon social for her PEO sisters who were invited to meet Miss Jessica Morgan a charter member of the PEO society of Hebron Nebraska. Visitors included Miss McNeill of Centralia Kansas and Miss Heinzman of Dalton. A three course lunch followed the afternoon program. Miss Morgan will return to Hebron Nebraska for Christmas vacation.
A column notes last week’s report of six births all boys and observes boys outnumbering girls in exchanges three to one. It links a superstition that more boys predicts war in eighteen years and weighs the grim phrase war is hell.
A. T. Nelson Joseph Madden Frank and Charles Nickeson of Ellis Nebraska are in this city this week. Nelson bought half a section of Cheyenne County land and plans to become a resident. Madden owns a quarter section five miles west of Sidney and intends to move there after disposing of Ellis interests. The other gentlemen may return.
Various couples from Lodgepole and nearby towns wed in December ceremonies. Samuel L Brook and Hazel A Friend unite before County Judge Gapen. Peter H Skow and Mabel Griffith wed at the Methodist parsonage with Ernest Loveless and Rena Griffith as witnesses. James M Crook and Florence C Sleight marry in Denver at the Methodist parsonage. The couples plan to reside on groom’s farm southeast of Lodgepole and commute for future visits.
Line West Open connects Sidney with Kimball via a direct telephone link finished on Tuesday. It now feels as easy as talking to someone in the same room, and the current management is praised as the most satisfactory in Sidney's telephone history. Step by step improvements continue to be made across the system.
Early Tuesday, the Alliance schoolhouse housing several grades was destroyed by fire, believed caused by a defective furnace. The blaze started around 4:30 am and progressed before discovery. The loss is tempered by the building’s age and upcoming vacation, limiting disruption to students.
Roy Richards a Banner County homesteader gave a check to a local business house that protested. Sheriff McDaniel brought him to town on Wednesday. Richards cashed the check paid costs and left. The incident appears an error in judgment rather than fraud.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fisher of Julesburg visited Sidney and were entertained at the homes of J. F. Worden, Harry Armstrong, and Ernest Worden. They returned home Wednesday. Mrs. Fisher, formerly Miss Maggie Snyder, once lived in Sidney and had many friends who would have welcomed more time with them in the city.
Dalton's grain harvest dominates the district with seven to eight rail cars often at the track and twenty-wagon loads from distant roads. Estimates place the county total between 300 000 and 400 000 bushels with weigh bills due in January to confirm the final figure.
A Dalton boy, Harry Clark, fractured a shoulder blade when jumping from a sluggishly moving freight car outside Dalton. The incident happened after several local boys were pressed into wagon driving to the Dalton market. The injury occurred before a doctor could reach, and the boy was taken to Bridgeport.
The engineers office in the Stewitts building is vacated as the team leaves for the winter and perhaps forever. The young engineers are described as civil and upright, leaving a memory of their service.
High school girls hosted a leap year dance Friday night paying their social debts to gallants. Florence Merifield and Sophie Gould made punch. Helen Lindsay, Frances Hart, and Gould managed floor duties. Stokes orchestra provided music as couples promenaded and flirted, with hopeful plans for four years hence to attract suitable partners.
A Lodgepole contingent joined Sidney to watch the basketball clash Saturday night. Among the many rooters were J. A. Bentley, Prof. and Mrs. Bostder, Mr. and Mrs. Tate, Will Jewett, Miss Zentz, Bertha Bates, Ruby Bates, Mabel Strom, Claud Smith, Fred Lehmkuhl, Vern Bates, Roy Isenberger, L. R. Barlow, and Floyd Barlow.
At a regular D of H meeting on Tuesday candidates were initiated and again on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Anton Grand Deputy C of H attended Tuesday night and led a business session before the group went to the Vienna restaurant for a spread. She is noted as a tireless worker who recruited many members for the order.
Miss Mabel Wallick resigned her telephone exchange position last Saturday and heads a pleasant vacation. Patrons regret the loss of her unfailing courtesy and sweet voice that eased many troublous incidents and fostered good feeling along the line. Manager Reider notes central staff shuffles while maintaining courteous service.
The Christian society held a business meeting Monday led by Mrs L G Simon and continued plans for their Christmas giving.
Mr and Mrs Uptegrove traveled to Lincoln to spend the holiday season with relatives, enjoying time with family and celebrating the occasion.
