Ragged Mulcahy Finds Narrow Freedom At Christmas
Mulcahy leaves the graystone penitentiary and wanders toward the city in a bitterly cold Christmas season. He contemplates a life on the street, attempts petty theft, aids a lost girl Violet Van Twiller, and at last surrenders to police after stealing a necklace to survive. He is sentenced to six months on the island, returns to mend the life he left, and ends up back at work with a grim, self-flattering brag about outsmarting justice.
