Road finance need stressed to Nebraska officials
A six member Nebraska Association of County Officials panel led by State Highway Engineer Harold Aitken warned that the state will not have adequate highways and county roads without proper financing. Aitken noted a $5 million loss in state road funds after repealing Peterson highway revenue measures and urged counties to review secondary road systems to cut miles. He cited that many roads carry under 10 vehicles daily and that highway tax revenue covers only about a quarter of maintenance costs. The panel included Forsyth, Sorenson, Kidman, Schroeder, Ayres, and Schutt.
