Sheep Industry Problems Are Being Researched
Dr Hudson Glimp of the U S Meat Animal Research Center spoke at the Midwest Sheep Seminar in Lincoln on December 6 outlining six factors behind low profits and a 60 percent drop in sheep numbers over 30 years. He cited high mortality, parasites and predators, labor needs, consumer resistance to fat and flavor, and wool competition with man made fibers, plus a 1968 production split where lambs accounted for 80 percent of value. He urged improvements in reproduction efficiency, feed utilization, management systems, and meat quality to reverse the decline and notes ongoing work at the center on breed traits and live-animal composition estimates.
