Cheyenne county farmers greet Uncle Sam’s allotment checks as 4300 checks totaling nearly $350,000 arrive. First letters mailed Tuesday prompt expected stampede this week as notices are issued in orderly fashion to avoid office overload. Continued on Page 8, Column 1.
A. E. Anderson, state and federal agricultural statistician, warned that Nebraska faces a seed corn shortage due to excessive moisture and an early freeze that ruined germination. The situation mirrors conditions in Iowa and Kansas, with only northeastern Nebraska potentially left with seedable corn and little supply remaining from 1934.
Light snow began falling in Sidney on Thursday afternoon as temperatures eased slightly. The Panhandle and western Nebraska face possible snowfall as weekend forecasts call for moderating temperatures after a week of frigid conditions with readings as low as seven above zero.
The city began decorating downtown streets this week to emphasize the Christmas spirit. Streamers of colored lights will be suspended across the streets. Other decorations will be made on the courthouse lawn and at the city auditorium. Several stores plan to follow and decorate their windows and storefronts to harmonize with the season.
The Kings Daughters prepare to distribute Christmas baskets and seek public help to locate families in need. Call Mrs. Leo Bartholomew or Miss Grace McIntosh to ensure each needy family receives a well stocked basket.
The music parents association will hold a regular meeting Monday evening December 9 at 7 30 in the junior high school auditorium. Principal business will be election of officers for the coming year. A general discussion on the Sidney instrumental program past present and future also will be held.
Frank O Burgess 61 retired Sidney merchant died at a local hospital Tuesday from complications of influenza after a week of illness. A native of Iowa born December 30 1874 he had lived in Sidney since August 1917 and operated a music store until last August. Funeral this afternoon. Continued on page 8 column 4.
Howard Hill stars in Last Wilderness at the Fox theatre filming notes place Jackson Hole Wyoming. The feature includes a dramatic bear battle as a mother bear defends cubs against a killer bear named Three Toes. Hill defeats the predator with six arrows.
A Telegraph advertiser reported a $200 Saturday volume rise from spending $2.50 to enlarge his regular ad. The merchant, steady in weekly value messages, says customers now expect the promotions and respond with liberal patronage.
Sidney Boy Scouts plan a toy drive this Saturday to collect and refurbish old toys into new ones for needy children. Residents are asked to place boxed toys on their front porches Saturday morning for pickup.
State Treasurer Hall distributed $302,585 to counties, three-eighths of November gas tax intake, plus $25,582 reimbursements from the highway department minus $16,553 refunded to dealers. Cheyenne county received $2,506.78, third in the panhandle, with Scotts Bluff and Box Butte just ahead.
State Senator Charles D. Green says ten year irrigation plans in Lodge Pole valley near Sidney may move forward with backing from wealthy backers, possibly qualifying for a Reconstruction Finance Corp loan. He notes a $25,000 initial step and a key engineer backer, with a letter expected soon to confirm travel for on site work and a visit by financiers. Continued On Page 8, Column 4.
The 1935 federal corn loan program opened in Nebraska Monday with about 40 applications on file with the Nebraska railway commission. Loans at 45 cents per bushel. Applications mainly from northeast counties, none over 1,000 bushels. Officials say grain appears No. 3 or better. Commissioner Bollen warns to test moisture before inspector costs. A. E. Anderson notes many Nebraska corn samples may be too wet to grade No. 3. No. 3 corn must weigh 51 pounds or more and moisture not over 17 percent.
Sidney stores showcase complete Christmas stock and advertise unusual values this week. With 15 shopping days left, merchants urge immediate selection to avoid disappointment. Christmas purchasing not fully opened yet but this Saturday may mark the first big day. Merchants focus on openings this weekend and spend heavily on ads. Stores offer lovely stocks and broad selection, with prices right and best merchandise.
Chris Nelson, 70, a Dalton area farmer since 1917 and Denmark native who came to the United States at age seven, died Wednesday in Dalton hospital. He never married and is survived by brothers Peter of Dalton and Nels of Wayne. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 P.M. from Rice Funeral Home with Dr. W T Kahse officiating. remains to be shipped to Wayne for interment.
Subscribers are informed that the current $1.50 yearly rate ends December and from January 1 the rate returns to $2 for residents within the trade territory and $2.50 beyond the 50 mile limit. Sports fans will pack Sidney for a finish wrestling bout Monday night December 9 with Old John Pesek the Nebraska wrestler favored to win the best two of three falls against Puffin Frank Buresh. Pesek is acclaimed as a top heavyweight wrestler and a leading figure in the sport, while Buresh is a 210 pound Dodge farmer noted for brutal in-ring work. Continued on Page 4, Column 1.
Montgomery Ward will open its Sidney store this Saturday at nine o'clock. Manager J. W. Barnhart expects 25 clerks for the opening, with A. O. Eells assisting. A large team prepared the store, under direction of M. W. Ponder from Chicago, and lighting was installed to meet Ward specifications.
The Lions club opened a Christmas home and yard lighting contest offering a prize for the most beautifully decorated home. Local residents expressed interest and urged a competitive event to boost participation. Judges will consider decoration beauty and theme across houses yards and baths, a common effort to beautify towns at Christmas.

Sidney taxpayers enjoy total levy below the panhandle city average with a 42.60 mill bill versus 51.47 for 15 cities. City levy 13.75 mills, county 4.70, school 22.00, valuations at 3,062,008, higher than Alliance and near Scottsbluff, while state totals include 106 Nebraska towns over 1000 population. State WPA Administrator Felton ordered a 15 percent reduction in administrative personnel by December 15. The move targets funding efficiency as 467 admin workers were paid in November across Lincoln Omaha Norfolk Grand Island Alliance North Platte districts. Felton cited temporary positions and program changes from ten to four months as reasons, estimating a savings of about $62,000 per month by reducing staff to roughly 397.
Shareholders of the Sidney Loan and Building association are notified by letter of a December 17 meeting at 7:30 p m in the city auditorium to vote on converting from a state charter to a federal savings and loan association, including charter acceptance and bylaws adoption.
William Null was found guilty of grand larceny by a district court jury Wednesday evening. The jury placed the value of turkeys at $41, as stated by E. F. Peters, manager of Omaha Cold Storage, ensuring a grand larceny conviction. Sentence awaited until next Monday when Judge I J Nisely resumes the term.
A district court jury found restaurant chef Lyle Curtis not guilty of a statutory rape charge involving nine year old Margaret Harwood after a little over two hours of deliberation. Jurors were seated Tuesday morning. final arguments came Wednesday, with the verdict read by D. R. Campbell after John Owens delivered the sealed verdict.
Cheyenne counties new debt conciliation committee met Tuesday to bring debtors and creditors together in a friendly setting. Guy Shaw of Sidney presided and urged better understanding to avoid foreclosures, lawsuits, and farm abandonments. Other members include Paul L. Martin of Sidney, secretary, and H. H. Scarlet fever remains a constant menace in Cheyenne County with new cases in Lodge Pole leading to school closures for two weeks and quarantines near Dalton and Gurley. A Sidney case is under strict quarantine. officials have not yet issued a district warning but may recommend further controls if spread continues.
The American Legion has committees busy planning next year’s Fourth of July celebration. They aim to secure top entertainment units before other cities sign them. A band contest with large cash awards is sponsored to attract strong groups while keeping costs close to past expenditures.
Mable Nelson daughter of Mrs J M Nealson and Glen Johnson son of Mrs Lena Johnson were married at Sterling Tuesday evening by Rev Elston at the Methodist parsonage. Witnesses were Mrs Ward Johnson and Mrs J C Rosse. A wedding dinner followed at the home of Mr and Mrs Claire Fleming. The couple will reside in Sterling where Mr Johnson is employed.
The Fox theatre and Greenlees sponsor a Shirley Temple lookalike contest on the stage of the theatre the week before Christmas. Winners receive Shirley Temple dolls and dresses, with a 22 inch doll and dress for first place and an 18 inch doll and dress for second. The state contest date will be announced soon.
Twelve members of the junior class comprise the cast for a three act comedy to be presented in the high school auditorium next Wednesday December 11. Matinee and evening shows will be given under Walter Kinne's direction. Proceeds go toward part of the junior-senior banquet costs.
The city council plans a final discussion on buying a Diesel engine or electric pump for the new auxiliary well in the west part of town. After weeks of debate no vote has occurred. Proposals from Western Public Service and Sidney Tractor and Machinery are under consideration.
Mrs Flora Genestia Flora of Sidney is named to Midland College honor roll for the first nine weeks. She posts a 3.92 average, within .08 of perfect. Of 26 on the honor list, five are seniors and seven from each other class. Thirty-six students are new on probation for quotients of 1.25 or below.
Melvin Sayre, nephew of Mr and Mrs Roy Liggett and cousin Edgar Sayre of this city, was elected captain of the 1936 Illinois university football team. Sayre, a center the past two years, missed part of last season due to injuries and was rated by Illinois sports writers as one of the outstanding centers in the Big Ten.
State Auditor Ayres registers 36500 of 4 percent refunding bonds issued to the federal government to fund an indebtedness of the Kimball irrigation district. The district has 144000 in 6 percent bonds outstanding since 1911 and 3699 of warrants.
