Sioux Army Depot phase out plans given at Sidney meeting
Lt Col Cyril Williams outlined the phased shutdown of Sioux Army Depot. From 634 workers in April 1964, 313 left, 161 temporary staff remain, with a target payroll of 268 a year from now and total closure by June 1967. The depot has shipped 86 962 tons of material this past year and will spend about $9 million annually until closing while demilitarizing 4 000 tons of ammunition, some by controlled explosions. The Defense Department will aid the community to ease impacts and repurpose facilities once needed.
