Coal Exports Raise Domestic Prices, I C C Finds
The I C C report to the Senate says foreign demand for American coal helped push Atlantic coast prices higher in early 1920, but abnormal domestic demand and production factors were the main cause. Nine months of 1920 saw 30,273,879 tons shipped, with 23,560,618 exported and 6,713,966 for bunkers, about 8.5 percent of production. Prices rose at mines, with contract coal at 3.26 per net ton in July 1920, versus 2.47 the year before. spot coal reached 3.96 per net ton.
