Fort Sidney Echoes End of an Era in Western Nebraska
The passing of Fort Sidney in Cheyenne county marks a shift from frontier military presence to railroad and private development. General Stanton recalls the post’s history from 1868, with stories of Sit ting Bull era defense and the heroics of scouts like Rattlesnake Pete Liddiard who warned a wagon train under siege. The fort’s buildings and land will yield to new owners as western Nebraska prospers and settlers flood in.
