City council in Sidney convenes at 7 30 for a regular meeting to discuss rezoning downtown from central business to C 1 classification. Planning commission backed the measure seven to one and two planning firms endorsed it. Existing businesses formerly in the zone would gain compliance though some opposition is expected.
Almost three thousand head of cattle were sold last week through private sale and auction at The Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion. Sixty three truck loads and twelve rail car loads moved to eastern Nebraska Iowa and Illinois feeders in one of the biggest livestock transaction weeks in this citys history. The pavilion handled 2 983 head of livestock during the week, the bulk of which was private sale to eastern feeders. The market was strong early in the week but lost some of its gain toward the end. However yearling steers brought 19.90 to 21.40 in Saturdays auction and steer calves sold up to 23.45. Heifers brought 18.50 to 20. There is a strong demand for cows and this was reflected at Saturdays sale where prices ranged from 10.30 to 16.30. Dave Truss pavilion manager says he has orders for cows and can guarantee a firm price. The next Special sale at the pavilion is set for Saturday September 12. Listings are now being taken for both the September 5 and September 12 sales Mr Truss said.
Three Sidney Council of Youth members earned Nebraska state leadership roles after the 1964 Youth Conference. Arlys Beese and Bill Eddy will chair state youth bodies for 1964 65, while Mary Jo Walsh will lead Creighton University’s local Youth Council in Omaha. Nebraska Youth awards also honored Sidney Lincoln Arapahoe Ogallala Humboldt for outstanding service.

Funeral services for Lawrence W. Dirks 73 were held this Monday afternoon at The Craig Mortuary with Rev M M Morrow of the Dalton Presbyterian Church officiating Burial followed in Dalton Cemetery Active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named Survivors include widow one sister five brothers and several nephews and nieces Dirks born March 27 1891 on a farm near Johnson Nebraska died August 28 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital Dalton He married Alice Lintz March 22 1917 in Johnson and later farmed in Texas before returning to Dalton where he did farming and mail delivery He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Johnson His hobbies included sports.
Weather outlook for Panhandle from today through Saturday shows clear to partly cloudy skies with a few brief afternoon or evening thundershowers. Tonight's low around 50 to 60, Tuesday highs in the 80s, and the five day period averaging 3 to 6 degrees above normal with highs in the 80s and nightly lows in the 50s. A few showers and thunderstorms are indicated during the period.

Ed Narjes Cheyenne County Republican chairman was named state coordinator for the Goldwater Miller campaign. He will set up an office in Lincoln and oversee campaign activities across Nebraska counties over the next two months. Narjes said he was eager to advance the Republican effort and provide voters a real choice in November. County leaders praised the appointment for Sidney and Cheyenne County.
A one car crash occurred at 4 p.m. Sunday on a county road south of Brownson. Phillip G. O. Bennett, 19, of Sioux Army Depot, driving a 1958 Thunderbird north at excessive speed, lost control, slid into a ditch and flipped onto its top. Damages were $475. Bennett suffered abrasions to his right hand and passenger Charles T. Hernandez sustained a cut on the left hand and pulled leg muscles.
County Agent Ivan Liljegren urges irrigation well drillers in Cheyenne County to register their wells under a state law aimed at establishing water priorities. Registration forms are available at the County Extension office. He notes the drought worsens water concerns and increases drilling activity.
Lois Ham will join The Sidney Telegraph news staff Tuesday focusing on women's page news and local notes. She has previously worked for The Telegraph KSID Boeing Co and will cover clubs lodges churches and other name prominent items. Kay Lynn Erickson and Bill Eddy will leave this week to pursue university journalism studies.
Frontier Airlines carried 128 passengers in Sidney up to last night with three reservations for today. August will miss the five-per-day target but improve on last year. Special college-rate fares are announced likely boosting September boardings. Sidney remains on Civil Aeronautics Board probation for continuous five daily flights, though Frontier will keep serving the city with a new schedule soon.
An oil discovery nine miles north of Bayard in Morrill County draws industry interest as Tol Tek Drilling Co and Tom Wessels recovered 180 feet of oil in a drill stem test at No 1 Hill. The rig moves to No 1 Uptegrove in Cheyenne County as more Morrill County drilling is anticipated and operators plan swab and pump tests.
Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission approved 16 drilling permits last week including three Cheyenne County sites. No. 1 Tompsett by Kimbark Exploration Co near Huntsman aims for 1J sand at 4,620 feet. No. 1 Uptegrove by Platte Valley Oil Co near Gurley targets 1J sand at 4,706 feet. No. 1 Larson by Tom Wessels west of Gurney seeks 1J sand around 5,150 feet.
About 1 000 to 1 500 people gathered in Town and Country parking lot over two days as a helicopter dropped numbered ping pong balls for prizes.
