Oberfelder Block and Sidney’s rising trade scene
The Oberfelder brothers, NY-born, developed a six year Sidney stay with the Oberfelder block on Rose and Front streets, housing their mammoth clothing stock and offices. They transformed a former hotel to offices and later built the Sit ney limestone block attracting merchants and farmers. Joseph and Robert Oberfelder are prominent in local society, education, and real estate, with Joseph treasurer and council member and Robert serving as mayor. The piece also notes the bustling businesses along Front street, including D W Lewis’s restaurant and Star clothing house founded by P J Colin and later run by Lewis Cohn and M Cohn.
