Protest Wheat Won’t Burn in Nebraska Price Protest
North west Nebraska farmers staged a protest on a Bill Campbell farm east of Chadron over fair wheat prices. About 100 people watched as 1500 bushels were soaked with 300 gallons of fuel oil and could not be burned. Campell said 15 farmers contributed the wheat with grain trucks from Dawes Box Butte and Sheridan counties. The action followed a 12 percent cut in wheat acreage allotments by the Agriculture Department without offsetting support payments. The National Farmers Organization was invited but did not sponsor the protest, which organizers say may continue at future events.
