Cheyenne County farmers plant wheat earlier than usual to use scarce soil moisture and hope for rain in the next week. Some worry about washouts from heavy storms but accept the risk to start crops. Irrigated harvest begins with beans, then potatoes and beets as reservoirs run low.
A Wednesday night storm brought beneficial rain to parts of the county but caused crop damage from hail. Four miles west and two south of Mitchell reported "Bad" hail with a possible mini tornado near Dalton. Windmills and small buildings damaged. Floyd Burdick roof torn off prompting evacuation. Wheat Belt Public Power District manager Charles Ham noted outages in Dalton while rain aided winter wheat planting. Sidney area saw limited rain. Potter area experienced heavy downpour.

Kimball Banner Cheyenne counties report multiple dry holes with no new producers, signaling a lull in Panhandle exploration while Red Willow Bundy Hitchcock and other counties see surge in leasing. Two wells drill in Cheyenne County and several new locations announced in Morrill and other counties as industry eyes eastward expansion in 1961.
St Patricks Academy released its boys basketball roster for the upcoming season attracting local attention. The squad features returning starters and several promising sophomores expected to compete for major playing time.
Two Sidneyites, Dean Wilson and L. A. Lindstrom, join 39 directors from 29 communities in Nebraska’s first State Chamber of Commerce. Articles of Incorporation filed Thursday. Sidney High School announces 10th 11th and 12th grade band members must report to the band room Monday at 9 am for the first practice session under director George Hinn.
Kimball poverty owners receive a five and one quarter mill reduction in the tax levy. The new levy stands at 6.70 mills due to decreases in the Kimball grade school and county high school levies and offsets from county and city levies. County increases focus on roads while city, Dix, and Bushnell districts also adjust their levies.
Five hundred hourly wage employees at Sioux Ordnance Depot will gain about 85 000 dollars yearly with a pay period start of Sept 18 1960. Raises range eight to ten cents per hour with eight cents for regular schedule, nine for working leaders and ten for supervisors.
Washington A bill to reapportion wheat acreage allotments was voted down by a House Agriculture subcommittee on Wednesday. The measure, sponsored by Rep Donald F. McGinley of Nebraska, aimed to remove inequities in allotment distribution.
Lincoln dispatch reports Gov Ralph Brooks, 62, improving at a Lincoln hospital after a virus infection troubled his heart, though doctors say no heart attack occurred. He was hospitalized by ambulance Tuesday and has needed oxygen since then. He attended the aging conference in Omaha despite not feeling well.
Gurley prepares for its first alumni gathering with 206+ attendees expected. A social hour runs 2 to 4 pm at the school auditorium, banquet at 6:30 pm at Legion Hall, then a business session and dance with Harley Ellis and his band. The class of 1923 is honored. Christensen sisters expected to attend. Harold Kieselhorst leads the alumni association.
Petition efforts continued for the Cheyenne County second district seat. Stewart Brown and John Underdown circulated petitions to join the November 8 ballot with Brown aiming for 250 signatures and Underdown with about 300. Fleming, the current holder, is moving to the state senate and cannot serve beyond January without appointment.
