Curve on Highway 19 near Sidney questioned by officials

Nebraska highway traffic engineer Robert Meyer said the newly opened Highway 19 curve south of Sidney may have been designed incorrectly given traffic needs. Five wrecks occurred in three weeks, including a fatality. Meyer blamed premature opening and inspection gaps, pledged signs and rumble strips, and discussed possible redesign due to the Interstate alignment.

Oil Hearing Set At Ft Sidney on Cheyenne County drilling

The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission will meet at the Ft. Sidney Motor Hotel on Tuesday August 22 to hear J. H. Bander and Pete Couch seek permission to drill an unorthodox location in section 24 in Cheyenne County. Local motorists have faced a banked curve transitioning to a flat road, raising safety concerns. officials discussed signage warnings, potential flashing beacons, and possible highway redesign. Mayor Thorpe praised swift highway department action and reiterated hope for eventual banking of the curve.

Fleming Named to Two State Study Committees

Senator George H. Fleming of Sidney joins two interim study panels on the impact of sales and income tax laws and on discrimination in property acquisition. City Judge Gish Issues Court Report For Past Fiscal Year

Sidney Police Court year ending July 31 1967 reports 266 cases settled by fines and costs totaling 4110 dollars deposited in the city treasury. Judge Roy Gish compiled the data from court records. May 1967 was the peak month with 493 dollars, November 1966 the trough with 163 dollars. Offenses listed include disturbance 42 vagrants 10 speeding 29 reckless driving 49 stop light violations 27 drunk driving 6 failure to yield 8 making a U turn prohibited 6 left turn prohibited 3 overtime parking 29 driving without a license 19 dog law 10 trespassing 3 and 22 miscellaneous violations.

SBI Buys Couch Hotel For Dorm Use

Ron Hell the dean of the Sidney Business Institute announced the school purchased the Couch Hotel 631 Clintois to serve as a girls dormitory housing about 30 students in supervised apartment style living. Lawyers L M Clinton and J H McNish and Sidney Federal Savings and Loan Association finalized the purchase. The building is partially used now and will be remodeled for fall classes while over 30 percent more floor space in the Marathon Oil Company Building is taken for classrooms.

Fleming Is Slated As Guest Speaker In Cheyenne Centennial Opening Ceremony

State Senator George Fleming will headline Cheyenne County Centennial opening ceremonies on August 20 at 1 p.m. at the fair grounds. Sidney Mayor J L Torpe gives the welcome, with Merle Bobo as Celebration Committee chair and Bergett Peetz as Fair Board chair. The five day festivities run August 19–23 with parades, bands, floats, and a free show on August 22 featuring Ken Carrett, the Canadian pipe band, West Kearney Indian Dancers, and Czech Folk Dancers.

Tiemann Cancels Town Hall Meetings in Sidney Centennial

Governor Norbert Tiemann told Frank Mattoon he will be in Sidney August 22 for the Centennial celebration but will not hold any town hall type meetings while there. The visit aims to avoid conflict with Cheyenne County events. a first meeting was postponed. The governor will attend a parade and luncheon for the Deadwood Sidney Trail Ride and speak at the fairgrounds in the afternoon.
