The Sidney Motor Hotel at 9th and Jackson is about two weeks ahead of schedule. Contractor Chester Johnson said the grand opening may occur around January 1. Basement block work is complete, first floor walls rise, and some steel should arrive the week of Aug 19. Local material purchases dominate. Mortgage officials Robert Majone and Donald Elbel praised progress. About 25 workers are on site. The hotel board reports pledges better than expected with about $2,000 collected. delinquent pledges will be foreclosed and sold at public auction per Nebraska law, with notices published around Sept 2 and sale around Sept 23.

Langley Faces Possible Charges Over Potter Tavern Death
Potter village marshal Dale Langley may face charges after a fatal tavern scuffle with Jack Stanford, an Oklahoma harvest hand. A coroner’s inquest found Langley feloniously assaulted Stanford before Stanford died at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital. Heaton considers manslaughter, second degree murder, or felonious assault as the proper charge. Langley claims self defense. no charges filed yet.

First Priest Appointed To Serve Ordville Parish
The Rev. Thom as Dowd of Grand Island is named the first priest for Sioux Ordinance Depot and will also serve Potter parishioners. Dowd, ordain ed 1954, has been assistant at Blessed Sacrament in Grand Island and directs diocesan youth. Born March 16, 1927 in Spalding, he studied at St. Marys Grand Island and St Johns Little Rock before theology at St. Thomas Denver.

Kimball Men Are Drowned In West Reservoir
Two Kimball oil workers, Cecil H. Stewart, 32, and Walter Earl Rogers, 29, drowned when their boat capsized at about 9:30 PM while fishing in Kimball County’s reservoir. Rogers’ body was recovered shortly after midnight and Stewart’s about an hour later. Both men worked for McCullough Tool Co. at Kimball and left behind wives and children.

The makeshift zoo at the junction of 19th Avenue and the Sidney Draw road develops an official look as Earl Harvey of Ohio Oil Company builds cages and displays. His collection includes golden eagles, seven great horned owls, three coyotes, a monkey and three raccoons, with space constraints preventing arrival of larger animals.
