Cheyenne County could receive between 500000 and 750000 from an eight million dollar WPA pool for the 14 western Nebraska counties in the fifth district. The funds aim to stimulate work and provide jobs, urging prompt local action to avoid losing its share while others gain.
Banks respond to state railway commission circular about grain loans. 50 replies show 47 will handle loans, two considering, one declining. J Jorgenson of American National Bank confirms plans to participate. Government funds via federal intermediate credit bank to back loans up to 60 percent of grain value at issue with 5 percent interest. No applications yet. further details in next pages. County Attorney Heaton and Sheriff Schulz return from Lincoln after reexamining Frahm murder case but offer little info. Heaton hints a day or so for further details. Frahm’s signed motorist story viewed skeptically.
Mrs T W McDonald wife of a well known Sidney florist died of a heart attack at her Lead home. She had been in good health awaiting a visit from her daughter Helen and had lived in Lead for many years. Survived by her husband two sons and one daughter.
State Tax Commissioner Smith released a table detailing county contributions under the 2.15 mill levy. Cheyenne County owes 41931 dollars, the highest in the panhandle aside from Scotts Bluff which must pay 51453 dollars.
Test wells are being sunk in the west end of town to supply the city mains. Several holes have been drilled on the McFadden property east of the McFadden house. The main well is being improved with a complete enclosure built over its entrance.
The softball schedule for next week lists matchups on Tuesday including Union Pacific versus Krumm's and Boyds versus DeMolays. Thursday features St. Patrick's versus DeMolays and Firemen against Lions, with Friday pitting Lions against Piggly Safeway and Krumm's against Firemen. crowds are large and interest revived.
Historic Pony Express days will be recalled in talks Friday evening August 16 in Sidney. Martin W. Dimery is set to discuss the Oregon trail and the Pony Express route. Sidney band will provide music as the boy scout delivers the mail around 8 15 p m and Postmaster W L Larson will compare old and new methods.
Former State Sheriff Endres claimed the body found in Garden County in 1934 may be Fred Hunter. He insisted the 1930s bootlegger was killed in the county and that the car found in Omaha was a deliberate misdirection to mislead investigators.
W B Banning, director of the state department of agriculture, has issued a permanent quarantine on shipments of alfalfa hay, prairie hay, and cereal straw from Scotts Bluff and Sioux counties after a hearing triggered by seven found specimens of the alfalfa weevil. An official order will take effect after publication. Entomologist M H Swenk outlined the weevil’s life cycle and impact, noting total extermination is unlikely where the pest is established.
Nebraska counties cut off work relief with virtually all areas shifting to cash direct relief until employment via WPA resumes. Three of four county groups are dropped, with Group one including Douglas Lancaster Thurston Hall Adams Lincoln Madison Buffalo and Scotts Bluffs kept temporarily hoped to end by August 15. Scotts Bluff receives 5050 dollars for August relief funds.
The Farmers Union Shipping Association plans to distribute 200 in dividend checks to participating members as stock production remains tight and shipping activity slows. Officers include Carl Mahr as president and William Bross as secretary. The Farmers Union creamery station will return about 700 to its patrons, with earnings over 14 thousand dollars last year and the Sidney station noted for high cream receipts.
Supreme court may rehear the case on H. R. 78 the Cone bill enabling installment payment of delinquent taxes with interest and penalties forgiven. Argument focused on whether the act stands alone or as an amendment and if it creates a new system beside existing revenue laws to induce delinquent owners to restore property to revenue production rather than seizure.
Nebraska cattle valuations rose in 1935 with average per head up from 18.39 to 23.38. Total cattle value increased to 58.18 million dollars while headcount fell from 3.03 million to 2.49 million. Cherry County led with 210,262 cattle valued at 4.90 million. other counties exceeding one million dollars included Cuming Custer Garden Grant Holt Lancaster Lincoln Sheridan and Sioux.
The seven year old Lancaster County mystery of John Frahm’s disappearance resurfaces as officials including Sheriff Fred Benton and County Attorney P J Heaton begin new talks with Frahm. Dentists will verify identity by dental records while investigators weigh fresh clues and previous skeletal findings.
Five people from Cleveland Heights Ohio were injured when their sedan overturned ten miles east of Sidney yesterday afternoon. Mrs Adam J Ross 65 and Adam J Ross 67 suffered critical and head injuries. Their daughter Mrs Rowland A Vartel 29 drove the car with scratches and possible internal injuries. Harriet Ross 26 and Thelma Vartel 11 sustained minor injuries. They were rushed to a local hospital where four were treated for injuries and one remained in critical condition. The crash was blamed on a rear tire blowout and the car tore a piece from the pavement before coming to rest on its top.
John Frahm, missing Glendale oil operator, was buried at Chappell on Monday while officials sought to identify a second body found near Sidney a day earlier. The burial coincided with a reinvestigation into the Frahm murder mystery opened by district court orders. Rev Daubenspeeck led services as Fred Frahm, serving a ten year term for the death, attended with Frahm family members. The body had rested for over fourteen months.
State Engineer Tilley announced the second installment of 1935-1936 federal aid projects. The plan includes 1.7 miles of sand gravel on highway No 19 between Huntsman and Sidney. Additional graveling in Custer and Cherry counties and other western Nebraska counties is listed with various mileage.
The Cheyenne county fair premium list will be mailed within a week or ten days. Most of the program is provided by committees and printing will start this weekend or early next week. The racing committee sets three final fair days with about $900 in purses plus entry costs. The entertainment lineup includes fireworks, an open-field army demonstration by Fort Warren soldiers, Schad's trapeze act, and a trick mule.
Sidney Seals, undefeated leaders of the western Nebraska league, travel to Sterling then Ogallala, host Ogallala Sunday, and play tough away and home dates August 18, 21, and 25, plus the August 25 to September 1 tri-state tourney. A game with Lexington and a tassel with Denver’s White Elephants are also being pursued.
Hot dry weather accelerates Cheyenne county harvest revealing extensive black rust damage. Local dealers report spring grain losses well over half with fields dropping from potential 40 bushels per acre to 5 10 or none. Winter wheat holds better but overall average well below 11.9 bushels. Some fields near Dalton and Sunol exceed 28 to 38 bushels, but most fall near 16 bushels.
Judge J L Tewell in Sidney outlined possible outcomes in the Frahm affair. If the body west of Sidney is John Frahm, Fred's guilt plea in Garden county stands or a Cheyenne county trial may follow depending on Freds testimony. If Fred admits killing John in Cheyenne county he would be freed of the Garden county sentence but face Cheyenne county trial. if the body proves not John Frahm, Garden county may face false imprisonment claims.
State Treasurer Hall reports July balances show the general fund down to 1 013 202 from 1 403 283 in June a drop of about 300 000. Revenue fund stays near 5 297 545 June 5 292 226 end of July. old age pension 34 127 liquor control 196 593. gas tax receipts 1 111 284 with 1 602 534 on hand. General fund expenditures July total 837 878 while receipts were 447 797. state assistance fund expended 542 with 798 219 on hand.
I rrigation and drainage districts can have ditches cleaned and repaired at very low cost by letting the Works Progress Administration handle the job. Applications to the Alliance office can secure a WPA project for a district. When labor dominates, the federal grant covers a major share. Unemployed workers will complete a full week under supervisors, performing quality work.
A crew led by George Plein began transforming the Slayter garage at Ninth Avenue and Illinois Street into a modern filling station. The front roof is being removed for an open air service platform with gasoline pumps and greasing racks. Slayter promises a five point service and a top modern station for Sidney, with all pumps relocated and work expected to take about a week.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon for Raymond Johnson 39 who died in a local hospital. Rev. L V Slocumb and Rev. Murten officiated with interment at Potter cemetery. Johnson had lived in Cheyenne county since 1913, married in 1920 to Lylia Ball of Fremont who preceded him in death seven years earlier. He is survived by two children Patricia and Roger, three brothers and three sisters. Herbert Johnson attended the service.
A 39 scout troop from the Scotts Bluff area will depart August 17 for the National Jamboree in Washington DC. The group has been designated as number one to lead the Nebraska Scouts in the capital parade, a reward for good work. Sidney Boy Scouts will join the leading troop.
City council voted last Friday to include Legion Park within the corporate limits. The park, already improving yearly and becoming a show place, will be further enhanced under future plans as part of the city.
The Native Sons and Daughters of Nebraska sponsor a contest for the best stories of Nebraska builders. Manuscripts must be mailed by August 15 to Miss Helen Tuttle at 1538 C. Lincoln. Prizes are awarded at the Nebraska State Historical Society and Native Sons and Daughters annual meeting in Lincoln on October 4 and 5.
Deputy State Sheriff E. E. Clark arrived in Sidney to examine a skull found last Sunday and determine if the death resulted from a bullet to the head. He also planned to view Body No 1 found near Oshkosh in 1934.
