Editorial supports highway funding study and constitutional amendment
The Omaha World Herald editorializes about Nebraska road building delays, but supporters led by Sen. Jules Burbach defend the committee’s careful research. They argue a November election to amend the constitution is warranted to fund the highway program, not to enable broader spending.

Auto Safety Wins Strengthen Outlook Despite Slowdown
An analysis by Prof. Paul W. McCracken highlights three factors behind the auto sales dip: cars to total economic activity alignment in 1966, tight consumer credit, and slower economic growth. Heightened consumer nervousness over price increases and Vietnam uncertainties also weigh, but safety design talks are not to blame. Meanwhile western Nebraska sees its August crops thriving, with dryland and irrigated fields delivering strong yields and farmers hopeful for a bright harvest and improved spirits.

Nebraska Must Vote on Highway Bond Plan for Growth
Governor Morrison faces pressure to call a special legislative session to place a constitutional question on the ballot this November. Nebraskans back a catch-up bond program to accelerate road building, while the state constitution caps debt at 100000. A vote could normalize highway financing and accelerate a 1969 or 1970 construction timeline amid rising costs and inflation. Nebraska trails neighbors in road development if the issue stalls.

Frontier Army Hospitals In Nebraska Indian Wars Era
Sister May Edmund of the College of St. Mary summarizes hospital and medical facilities at Fort McPherson and Fort Robinson based on Nebraska State Historical Society archives. Fort McPherson housed a yellow L shaped complex with 24 beds, 450 cubic feet air per man, eight windows per wing, a wash room, kitchen and dining area, and an ambulance corps drilled daily. Fort Robinson started with four seven bed hospital tents, later replaced by a sturdier building, with many gunshot, snake bite, typhoid and influenza cases. The piece notes detailed wartime medical treatment in the late nineteenth century and quips from soldiers during sick call.
