Panhandle farmers finish $40 million winter wheat harvest

Western Nebraska’s eleven counties reported about 25 million bushels of wheat harvested this year with many fields left uncut due to hail damage or heavy matting. Farmers stored much of the crop as government loan protection while market prices hovered around $1.45 per bushel, leaving little incentive to sell. Irrigators face around-the-clock water management as dry heat and near 100 degree temperatures persist.

High Protein Wheat Profits Dashed by Weather

Western Nebraska farmers hoped for high protein wheat payments after a July harvest. Elevators report protein levels mostly nine to twelve percent as rains delayed harvest. Grain test weights fell from 62–63 to 57–58 pounds per bushel, eroding premiums. Grain men blame weather for the drop in protein content.
