Established in 1873 western Nebraska counties report a standout corn season with Cheyenne County farmers predicting ahead of recent years. Moisture remains adequate and sunshine in coming weeks could yield a large harvest this fall, similar to Illinois and Iowa in 1923.
Robert Mitchell alias Ray Smith, an itinerant farm hand from Atoka Oklahoma, was convicted in district court on forgery charges tied to checks drawn on Jacob Butherus’s account and endorsed by C A Smith. He received a term of one to three years in the state reformatory. Authorities note several forged checks passed at local stores as part of harvest hand frauds affecting farmers and merchants.
Mrs. Bessie Loy of the Olean hotel learned that her daughter Mrs. Donald Miller was killed when the car carrying her and husband overturned into a ravine north of Cheyenne. Mr. Miller escaped with minor injuries. Mrs. Miller died at a Cheyenne hospital within hours. She left a five year old daughter and the Millers moved to Cheyenne from Denver six weeks ago.
Andrew Christensen, longtime Sidney market figure, leaves Central market to run the Waggoner shop location in Kimball. A skilled West cutter with extensive market experience, he aims to establish a first class market in Kimball and is viewed as a reliable, progressive addition to the town.

Sidney chamber of commerce discussed securing the new 200 bed veterans hospital for Nebraska and urged backing from the community. Postmaster I L Pindell was tasked to present Sidney’s claims to the hospital commission and a bridge project on Lodge Pole creek was urged with county officials to improve heavy traffic access.
John C Coulter former governor of Utah and Desert National Bank president died after shooting himself in his garage in Salt Lake City He had been ill for months and financial worries were cited by associates He was 81 and had arrived in Utah as a child immigrant in 1860 after working as a potato digger to earn a living The city had searched for him after he disappeared from the bank at 930 am Monday and he was found the next day in a cafe explaining his absence with worries over business matters
Congressman Robert G. Simmons of the sixth district outlined a plan to locate a Nebraska veterans hospital near the center of veterans in the state after receiving a letter from Frank T. Hines of the Veterans Bureau. The proposal would select a broad area including several cities before the final site is chosen.
Dr. D. L. Abbott of Alma Nebraska moved to Sidney this week and opened offices in the Osborn building once used by the late Dr. Harry L. Mantor. Abbott comes after study at the Nebraska University and service in government hospitals in Panama with a successful Alma practice.
Nebraska federation of Women’s Clubs announced a two year drive to end illiteracy by 1930 with local chairmen and district schools of methods under Mrs. J. R. Thompson. The General Federation and federal government support adult education through Lincoln and state convention efforts with teachers being trained.
Market factors including heavy weekly movement of new winter wheat, rising world stocks, and favorable Canadian prospects drove the cash and futures markets lower through July 28. Rye eased, oats and barley fell as grain receipts grew. export inquiries remained limited with bids about 15 cents below a year ago. No. 1 hard winter delivered at Texas gulf ports quoted at $1.29 to $1.30, while Liverpool bids for No. 2 hard winter Aug shipment stood around $1.39 per bushel. Manitoba prices for August and September shipments ranged around $1.32, with No. 1 Manitoba for October at $1.48.
William R. Woods longtime Cheyenne County resident and former county official was named superintendent of the Sidney airplane landing field for Boeing, succeeding John T. McIntosh who resigned to become clerk of Cheyenne County District Court. Woods has led the local field recently and previously farmed in the Dalton district.
R. M. Bookout, once linked with a Sidney business house and known to Cheyenne county residents, was reported under arrest at Scottsbluff yesterday on a charge of passing short checks in several places. Charges also pending for non payment on an automobile deal. Julesburg officers requested he be held for them.
Fort Crook Nebraska hosts 600 Nebraska and Iowa youths for four weeks of Citizens Military Training in army tents and drills. The camp features six hundred rookies in four company streets led by regular army officers, with three rifle companies and a machine gun unit, dining in a large mess hall.
Washington reports a Republican national committee plan to spend four million dollars for the campaign. Chairman Work announced the amount after a meeting with treasurer J. R. Nutt and other party leaders. Active fundraising will start soon with limited large donations and a broader radio effort estimated at up to two hundred thousand dollars, higher than the 1924 spending.
Gasoline consumers in the Rocky Mountain region face a one or two cent per gallon increase effective Wednesday. Standard Oil of Indiana served 14 states with higher prices as refinery costs rise, with Denver's price at 22 cents and local stations at 20 1/2 cents per gallon for kerosene also up one cent.
Mrs. W. E. Chambers of Sidney received a telegram announcing the death of her brother, David N. Wells, of Dos Palos, California. He was 23 years old and had just passed his 25th day. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Wells was a former Sidney resident and was well known locally.
Jack Knight, air mail pilot, wired Boeing at Omaha that he would report back for duty Wednesday. He moved his Buhi plane to Marysville Michigan after being forced down at Grand Island due to engine trouble during a New York to Los Angeles nonstop attempt.
