May 1 is the last day to register for the primary, and changes of name or address can affect eligibility. If not properly registered you cannot vote May 12. staff can fix registration.
Cheyenne County voters face May 12 polling changes due to redistricting. Precincts Trognitz Bunker Hill Eagle Chambers Huntsman Sidney Rural Ordville Brownson are realigned to Potter Davison Lodgewose Lorenzo Gurley and Brownson precincts with polling at American Legion Hall Potter Center School Lorenzo School Gurley Fire House Armory Ordville Student Center. If unsure, visit County Clerk Ralph Englert at the courthouse.
Youth and adults are invited to a 28 mile hunger walk on Sunday May 10 coordinating by Tom Borges of Dalton. The route starts at Weymouth Field Sidney travels to Huntsman Ordville Brownson and returns. Sponsors pledge per mile with funds to anti hunger campaign.
The planned route begins at Weymouth Field on Jackson Street and winds through Weymouth to 19th Avenue then Maple to 7th back to Jackson and onward to 13th north, then east past Lee's Cash Auction to depart town. It continues through Huntsman Ordville and Brownson to U.S. 30 overpass, then Sidney Draw road back to Sidney and into town on 19th Avenue. Checkpoints will verify participation and provide food and medical aid as needed. Walk scheduled for Sunday May 10 with rain or shine. County officials and Nebraska Highway Patrol back route safety efforts. county superintendent supports participation with parental signed walk cards for walkers under 20.
A Dalton youth mobilizes support for a hunger walk after reading Senior Scholastics Magazine. With help from Pastor Kenneth Malpert and local residents, he aims to inspire regional youth and adults to join a cause that could grow from a local effort to a national impact raising substantial funds.
Leaders endorse the event led by Tom Borges with letters from Sens. Hruska Curtis McGovern and Rep Martin. Chambers of Commerce, county officials and law officers back the May 10 march guiding youth volunteers and sponsor drives.
The Lincoln Sowers Club will visit Sidney Thursday morning from 10 to 10 30. About 55 Lincolnites are expected with a band, clowns and horses. They plan to park northeast of the courthouse.
The 1970 Sidney United Fund Drive ended Monday night with total contributions of 12 460.53 surpassing the 12 200 goal by 200. Checks were distributed to American Red Cross Boy Scouts of America Girl Scouts United Service Organization Kings Daughters Salvation Army Muscular Dystrophy Association and Travelers Aid Association. Raoul Nelson named to United Fund board replacing Hammond McNish. Audit shows since 1964 the United Fund raised 86 434.73 for beneficiary charities. Benny Hockman, drive chairman, praised the campaign’s success as the goal was finally met.

The Boy Scouts of America will undertake Project SOAR Save Our American Resources in response to President Nixon. Cyrus B. Hall of the Wye Braska Area Council announced the plan to run during Boy Scout Week February 7 13 1971 and throughout the year. The program aims to teach natural resource value and environmental interdependence with boy participation. A Utter prevention day is set for June 5 1971 and the summer camping season will expose over 1 million boys to conservation training and projects.
Two men Edgar Hallberg and Kenneth Moore charged with a western Wyoming trading post burglary were arrested after a Nebraska trooper stopped their 1959 Chevrolet for a faulty muffler. The trio, later identified, faced jail in Cheyenne County as evidence tied them to the Fort Bridger post burglary.
Sidney Police investigated a minor two car collision Monday night around 8 p.m. on 11th Avenue in downtown Sidney. A Sidney Community TV vehicle driven by Sol Willis Jr. backed from a parking space and struck a parked car owned by Mrs. Mabel Portz of 596 Charlotte Drive.
Nebraska Department of Roads releases a six year plan for 1969 to 1975 highlighting more than 37 million dollars for I-80 work in Kimball Cheyenne and Deuel counties. Projects extend to western Nebraska with major segments near the Wyoming line Sidney and Chappell and include spurs and connections in Kimball and Deuel counties. The plan targets future contracts in 1970 and aims to complete all I-80 contracting by 1973 with construction in 1974.
The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department was called to 925 Forrest Tuesday night at 10 11 p m to extinguish a fire that damaged part of a wall and a heater.
Lodgepole resident Georgia D. Wise 86 died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital after a monthlong illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 PM at Lodgepole United Methodist Church with Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial follows at Pleasant View Cemetery. The Craig-Holechek Funeral Home handles arrangements. Wise, born October 27, 1883 in Fort Wayne Indiana, was married July 28, 1901 to Victor W. Wise and moved to Lodgepole in 1910. She is survived by five sons Glen Floyd Charlie Dale of Lodgepole and Volney of Portland Oregon. three daughters Lucille Meyer and Bessie Hernbloom of Lodgepole and Ruth Outright of Sidney. one sister Myrtle Ellstead of Auburn California. one brother Walter Dunton of Guadalajara Mexico. 25 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Sidney Attorney John Peetz Jr. will speak at the Loyalty Day program hosted by VFW Post 610 and its Ladies Auxiliary this Saturday evening. The public is invited as Law Day and Loyalty Day fall on May 1. A 6:30 p.m. covered dish dinner precedes the program with honors for past commanders and presidents and Voice of Democracy winners.
Elmer Phelps and his wife sold Elmer's Tavern I in Lodgepole after 21 years of operation. The new owners are Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hurst who run a roofing service. The Phelps family hosted a farewell party with a money tree but plans to remain in Lodgepole.
Balmy weather gave way to chillier air as a brisk northeast wind moved in. A 30 degree low was recorded at the Flight Service Station with a 44 degree by midmorning. Monday highs reached 71 and Tuesday peaked at 64.
