LB518 gains preliminary approval in Nebraska legislature

Lincoln UPI A bill to eliminate the personal property tax over three years won 29 to 10 preliminary approval in the Nebraska legislature. LB518 would abolish farm equipment tax next year and set state contributions to the Personal Property Tax Relief Fund at a $70 million ceiling. Amendments were withdrawn as insufficient support formed, while some proposals would have altered relief fund calculations or offered different exemptions.

Showers may be coming in central and eastern Nebraska

A weak cold front moved from the famanche toward eastern Nebraska. A slight chance of thunderstorms and showers was forecast for central and eastern counties tonight. Extreme fire weather prevailed in western Nebraska with partly cloudy skies, humidity around 25 percent and southerly winds 10 to 20 miles per hour. Overnight lows ranged 43 to 58 across Chadron Norfolk and Grand Island after Monday highs from 81 in Norfolk and Scottsbluff to 70 or 9 in Imperial.

Sidney City Council votes to prepay bonds and destroy coupons

The Sidney City Council passed a resolution to prepay selected paying bonds and authorized destruction of paid bonds and coupons. The utilities report showing higher electric rates from wholesale power costs was approved, with City Clerk Gordon Tobin noting over half of the net income from city electric bills since August came from interest rather than plant operation. At the Housing Authority meeting before the council, roof repairs or replacement at Sioux Villa were discussed but no formal action was taken.

Pioneer Airways upbeat on Sidney service progress

Pioneer Airways President John Warren said he was surprised by passenger volumes since April 15, with daily one passenger to and from Sidney achieved after four months.
