Big Wheat Crop Seen In 1966
The 1966 winter wheat crop is forecast at 79.9 million bushels, up 42 percent from 1965 and about 12 percent above the 1960-64 average. If realized, it would be the largest crop since 1960, with an expected yield of 25 bushels per seeded acre. Planted acres total 3.196 million, below last year and the five year average. Factors: delayed planting from rains, favorable soil moisture, and winds causing some erosion in March. overall winter losses were light and dormancy break early. Further rain, especially in the southeast, would help.
