A suit in Scotts Bluff county district court by The Western Public Service company seeks to enjoin the sale of bonds authorized by the Mitchell city council to finance payment for light and power property taken in condemnation. The bonds, reportedly sold to Mitchell residents, involve city treasurer Van Elliott who was to tender payment. Defendants include Mayor H. M. Springer, the city fire department and 15 others including city council members. The issue of 39,686 dollars was partly sold to residents of Mitchell.]
Farmers in western Nebraska may face crop losses from cut worms this year. State entomologist O S Bare told county agents last week that Morrill and Banner counties already report damage, with Cheyenne likely least affected. If warm weather persists, worms could spread through the panhandle hurting grain fields. grasshopper risk is lower unless an external outbreak occurs, Perkins County harboring the nearest bed and Dawes Sheridan showing grasshoppers in prairie grasses. The city of Sidney proclaims Clean-Up Week from April 30 to May 5. Residents are urged to thoroughly clean premises and haul away rubbish and ashes to keep Sidney sanitary and attractive. Mayor Herman Schroeder issues the directive for all householders to participate.
Federated workers of Cheyenne county file a resolution with Sidney city council objecting to city appointments. They urge filling all vacated positions with unemployed locals, arguing employed men offered city posts should refuse to leave private jobs. At month start over 90 000 sought work, while 71 674 names remain carded as job seekers per statistician William Cotter, with active unemployed likely above 50 000. J W Johnson president of the Woman's Club thanks local organizations business men and individuals for the generous response to appeals for help with the recent sixth district convention in Sidney Delegates noted the cooperative spirit and the club credited the support with making the meeting a success.
Western Nebraska conference track athletes have trained for the 15th annual meet to be held on the Scottsbluff cinders. Officials expect entries from 15 or more of the 21 invited conference schools for one of the fastest meets in the event’s history.
The Altar society members of the Catholic church host the annual May bazaar on May 2 in the academy auditorium. A delicious supper begins at 5 PM, with candy and fancy work booths for enjoyment. The dance starts at 9 PM with a ten piece orchestra providing music.
J W Neilsen, Sidney high school instructor, wins the Sidney Cribbage club title by defeating William Edwards in the finals after reaching the finals through a semifinal win over F A Bush and J W Johnson. Edwards had previously eliminated the other semi finalists. Ernest Biggs led the season with 70.2 percent. several players posted averages above 55.0 percent.
The 1934 telephone directory is printed in the Telegraph's commercial printing department and will be delivered to the local telephone office Saturday night for distribution by May 1. This year the directory sports a green cover to distinguish it from last year’s grey-covered edition.
