A partial weather update warns receivers to call 4939 if a carrier delivered telegraph is not received by 6 p.m. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with light rain or snow showers tonight and Saturday. Lows tonight around 25 to 30, Saturday highs near 50, and a five day outlook shows daytime highs from 30 to 65 with nighttime lows in the 30s.
Slippery road surfaces from recent heavy snow caused three accidents on Route 30 and in Sidney. State Trooper Del Shipley investigated. A Greyhound bus near Potter suffered seven minor injuries among 26 riders after a car pulled into its path. A Rezac car rear ended a westbound truck near Sidney with no injuries. A Hoagland station wagon crashed into a fence east of Sidney with minor injuries to J V Hoagland. Snow and slick streets also caused a 3rd and King intersection smash injuring no one.
Telegraph want ads highlight bargains in mowers houses and boats. A two bedroom brick Feiss is listed for a bargain and ready to move in. Aluminum carton keat offered at reduced price. Home owners can rent a power lawn mower to save time. Call 5555 to place ads with a bargain rate of three issues for two.
Reservations must be made by tomorrow for a dinner at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel next Tuesday evening marking the visit of the Lincoln Sowers Club. Dinners are $2.25 per plate and may be reserved through the Sidney Chamber of Commerce at phone 2800. Wives may accompany husbands. the Lincoln group will provide entertainment and door prizes. M R Sigler urged members to call in promptly as only four reservations had been received by noon.
The Federal Land Bank of Omaha lowers long term farm mortgage rates from 5% to 4.14% and outstanding 5% loans drop to 4.44% with July 1 installments. President Thos A Maxwell Jr cites bond costs and strong reserves as reasons. About 25 million dollars in Iowa Nebraska South Dakota and Wyoming loans affected. The Sidney Kimball National Farm Loan Association operates in Cheyenne Kimball and Banner Counties.
Jay C. Hart of Farmington New Mexico was arrested by Sheriff W W Schulz on suspicion of grand larceny after being found with a ladies wrist watch valued at about 3000 dollars. The watch features a platinum case set with 56 diamonds including two 12 carat stones two baguettes and 52 smaller diamonds. Hart will be turned over to Aztec NM for further proceedings.
The Colorado Nebraska oil patch saw a surge with 42 new operations this week, 24 in Colorado and 18 in Nebraska. Kimball County reported thirteen drilling rigs, a yearly high, while Nebraska production slipped to 49,913 barrels daily. Cheyenne County hosts two planned wells by The Ohio Oil Co. in Spearow Field near Gurley and a prospect near the West Sidney gas field.
Paul A. Reiners, 48, longtime Sidney resident, died this morning after a lengthy illness. Funeral services pending. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge. Born July 3, 1919 in Fordyce Nebraska, he was married to Elizabeth Schmitt Aug 14 1932 in Sterling. Survivors include wife, two daughters Helen Call and Donna Wilson, two grandchildren, four sisters, two brothers, with one daughter predeceased.
The Telegraph announces a new regular farm page starting with the Monday April 28 issue. Plans include expanded rural coverage with staff columns and reports for city and county readers, featuring farm leaders, officials from farm organizations, and occasional editorials from the paper and national farm writers.
A government action brings all ASC affiliates into Civil Defense. Don Rapp reports USDA will supervise food reserves during disasters and coordinate with Sheriff Schulz and Police Chief Willis. An emergency exercise called Operation Alert is planned for May 6-7 to test readiness and community support.
The Nebraska Game and Fish Commission approved a plan proposed by the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce to stock the Legion park lagoon with bullheads this spring. Bill Peterson, Jaycee program chairman, announced a children’s fishing contest for those 15 and under after stocking is completed.
The Wheatbelt Public Power District tested its new emergency vehicle the weasel on clear tracks to navigate snow and wind damaged lines between Sidney and Chappell. Crews used the tracked vehicle to patrol private rights of way reducing field damage versus wheeled trucks. Manager Charles Ham patrolled lines by air from Lodgepole across Devel Garden and Arthur Counties. a line northeast of Lewellen was untangled with a 28 foot telescopic hot stick after an in pasture landing. Roads were worst seen in winter but service was restored promptly using varied equipment.
Sidney hosts a home grown rack jobber turning from one man operation to a million dollar drug distributing concern. Panhandle Drug Service offers delivery shelf stocking of drug sundries stationery school supplies hardware housewares toys and hosiery. Founder Jack Ritz arrived in Alliance in 1948 but Sidney encouraged him to settle and start the business.
Linda Mintken former Miss Fort Sidney 1958 travels to Lincoln to compete in the Miss Nebraska Pageant among 12 Nebraska beauties. The winner will be crowned Saturday night at Pershing Auditorium by Miss America Evelyn Van Derbur.
Nebraska bankers gathered in Alliance elected Lyle D Rabe of Dalton as vice president at a Group 6 gathering. C G Schwentker of Ogallala was named group president, with A C Peterson of Lodgepole on the resolutions committee. Attendees included D W Jorgenson and others from Sidney.
Mr and Mrs George Hare install plastic moulding gear at 2024 7th Ave to seal cards documents and pictures in clear plastic for permanence. Mrs Hare handles the business side while Mr Hare does the work with plastics to dust proof moisture proof and prevent tearing.
Sidney's Temple Commandery No 30 Knights Templar will hold a special session starting at 9.30 am Saturday April 26 in the Masonic Temple Eminent Commander Gerald Thornburg of Chappell will oversee conferring of degrees on several candidates All Knights Templar members are urged to be present
State and federal health service reps approved the Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital nursing home addition design. The plan features 68 beds plus dining and recreational areas and a private chapel, with a projected cost per bed lower than national averages. Funding shortfalls may force either a phased build or a reduced-size wing, while alternate bids keep within budget.
The Communications Commission tentatively granted Western Nebraska Television Inc a new TV station on Channel 13 at Alliance Nebraska. The company is principally owned by KCOW Ailliance and KOLT Scottsbluff operators and will have studios in both cities.
Robert Lowe of the Nebraska VFW said on Thursday the group has collected about 50 474 valid signatures in its petition drive to place the legalized bingo question on the November general election ballot.
