High honor to Sidneys Lowe newspaper man of year

Lincoln UPI reports Jack Lowe of the Sidney Telegraph received the Nebraska Press Association Master Editor Publisher Award at a convention banquet. He led the paper from weekly to triweekly, boosted circulation, served on city council and as mayor, and helped found a community journalism fund.

Telegraph wins five awards in NPR contest

Lincoln The Sidney Telegraph won five Nebraska Press Association awards including a first place for best use of color in advertising. Three runner up plaques went to best front page best picture page and best use of color in editorial. Scott Bluff Star Herald tops daily categories nine times and Ak-Sar-Ben honoring four papers with community service and agriculture plaques. Sidney and surrounding districts saw heavy rainfall with Sidney Airport reporting 3.16 inches in April.

Michelle Crittenden reappears in beauty pageant scene

The former Miss Sidney and Miss Greeley, Michelle Crittenden, will appear at events as a stand-in for Miss Colorado Karen Land after Land was stripped of her title following a $234,000 suit. Crittenden, previously first runnerup, remains tied to Sidney and Greeley titles while not currently Miss Colorado.

Sidney girl wins contest in Cheyenne County spelling bee

Nancy Holling an eighth grader from Sidney won the Sidney High spelling contest on Saturday, earning an all expense paid trip to Omaha for the Midwest spelling bee. The elimination rounds left Holling and Randy Qommen of Lodgepole, with Holling prevailing after the final spellings.

Rotary District Conference Draws About 200 in Sidney

Approximately 200 visitors attended the District Rotary Conference in Sidney from Thursday through Saturday at Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Congresswoman Virginia Smith was among those present.
