The fire department made two runs this week. Saturday night a blaze at the Union Pacific depot damaged the express office and mail sacks but most mail was saved. Wednesday night a blaze damaged the Lyon home barn, burning a large portion of the building before being controlled.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen held its second annual dance at the opera house on Monday night April 13. Fred Taylor of Cheyenne served as master of ceremonies. Co L Sweet chaired the arrangement committee with six members. Music by Fine's six piece orchestra featured Sam Fine Glenn Van Gorder Mona Corbett Blaine Trabill Goldwin Doran Alfred Bentley. Fred Griffith provided punch and confections. The event drew large crowds and was praised for its elegant, refined atmosphere and decorations in Brotherhood colors.
A light two day rain Thursday evening into Friday soaked parched soil in prime condition. Each drop arrived at the right moment, preserving the field's splendid shape and moisture level for the season.
The Wichita Eagle praises the College Girls Musical Comedy Company at Tobin Opera House on Monday April 20. The troupe, opened at the Auditorium Theatre, wins quick favor with laughter and applause. Wardrobe and scenery are praised as pretty and fine while the four comedians entertain without vulgarity, delighting the many ladies in attendance.
Nebraska Experiment Station Bulletin No 140 discusses storing water in soil at the North Platte Substation to use with rainfall. It covers summer tillage, weed control, plowing versus disking, artificial mulches, crop depths, and the importance of preventing weed growth to conserve soil moisture. Miss Merna Swatzlander, taken to Omaha with her parents Dr and Mrs Swatzlander, underwent an appendicitis operation soon after arrival. Her condition was very serious, then improved to fair chances of recovery while still grave. Merna, a bright popular Sidney High School student, is warmly supported by the community during this critical week.
M B Darling of Kimball was in town Thursday. P J Dunn and wife visited Saturday. Wm Goering of Potter stayed overnight Thursday. A pay car marked payday on the 16th. Mr and Mrs P Goering of Potter visited Thursday. G T Willis of Dalton State Bank attended the city Wednesday. Horace Moore left Tuesday evening for a short Denver trip. Lewis Brett of Sextorp spent two days late last week. Wash Moore began a pleasure trip to Seattle. Don Devine greeted wife and daughter as their train paused here briefly. Kenneth Agnew, Pacific day clerk, resigns to join Sidney Transfer & Implement House as bookkeeper. Mrs Maude Gary and Mrs Nellie Garey visit Wisconsin relatives with Olive Ribble of Winston.
On April 15, 1914, at the Sidney courthouse, Edward H. Raddatz and Ethel Bowser of Lodgepole wed after being united by County Judge Gapen. Witnesses were Miss Ida Bowser and Frank Radditz, with many attending. The couple plan two weeks of relatives’ visits before establishing a home. Bowser hosts a dinner for fifty tomorrow in their honor.
Ralph A. Tiffany and Miss Ida Osterberg were married on April 12 1914 at the Osterberg home in Galesburg Illinois. They will reside in Omaha after June 1 at 2431 Ellison Avenue. The couple are well known in Sidney with Ida overseeing the millinery at Sidney Mercantile and Ralph working in the Union Pacific dispatchers office.
United in marriage by County Judge Gapen at his office on April 13, a couple joined in matrimony.
Mr William Kk Ubbin and Edith Durham both of St Joseph Neb were married by Justice of the Peace A A Clark at his office on April 14 according to local notice.
District Court re-convenes next Monday February 20 for an adjourned February term. A long docket includes jury trials, the usual divorce suits, many civil cases, and one murder trial. The term should last about a week and attract outside interest beyond the cases.

Mrs. T L. Martin returned early in the week from Hastings where she underwent a successful operation for appendicitis. Mr. and Mrs. Radditz and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bowser of Lodgepole attended the Radditz Bowser wedding here Wednesday.
O. R. Owens, manager of the local agency, delivered cars this week to A. K. Greenlee of this city and Mr. Casselman of Lodgepole. Mr. and Mrs. J. A Bentley and Mr. and Mrs Jack Sager spent from Sunday until Tuesday in Denver sightseeing and shopping.
Irish Haun and Mary B Haun of Haxtum Colorado wed in a ceremony conducted by County Judge Gapen at his courthouse office on April 15.

John Herren of Peetz traveled to Omaha and Iowa then came back Friday noting the climate felt favorable after a damp season.

Dr C W Zike came back Wednesday from Lincoln after business related to his calling. He relocated his family Thursday into the Shipman cottage.
Mrs Joseph Oberfelder left for New York City last evening to spend the summer at the seashore. Mr Oberfelder will join her in early June.
Mrs A Lindberg lets the contract for a modern bungalow on her cast lot with her family to occupy the new home and rent or sell the other. P J Conner has the contract.
C E Harper let the contract for a modern bungalow on his west lot beside his residence. C P Grant holds the contract and when finished it will be occupied by Mr and Mrs Jacob Eckert.
Steve Babb of the north east country visited the county seat Tuesday with his sons Clarence and Bunch. The Babbs are enthusiastic boosters for the country, backed by many years of actual experience in the area.
W H Boges awarded the contract to S R Sweet to build a two story residence on the ranch one and a half miles north of Sidney. He also plans other large improvements as soon as crops are in, with work to proceed rapidly.
Arthur M. Oberfelder of Denver traveled through the city last evening en route to Chicago and New York to attend the annual meeting of the National Redpath Association where he serves as general manager of the Rocky Mountain district.
H Bettendorf advances slowly after a five week illness from liver and gall troubles. He is among the town’s earliest citizens and has contributed much to the welfare of the community. Neighbors will be glad to see him return his pleasant greetings on the street.
A large shopping delegation from Lodgepole visited the town the day before. Among them appeared Mrs. Pettis with daughter Clara, Mrs. Libby and daughter Barbara, Ruby Bates, Miss Applegate, Mrs. Jewett, Mrs. Morehead, Mr. and Mrs. Hollis, Francis DeBruner, Mrs. Rodgers, and Mrs. Pierce.
John Angel recently moved from Illinois and is making a large farm from raw county materials fourteen miles northwest of here. He is putting up substantial improvements and plowing on a large scale in the city area and county.
Ezra Chambers of Sidney Draw carried off the pennant on Monday for the largest hog brought to market. One hog weighed 500 pounds and brought $38.75. He says he is not a strong hog raiser and hints he may do better with improved stock.
St Patrick's church featured the Rosewig mass sung with notable music directed by W Klein. The small town heard refined music rarely, as Sidney's Catholic choir boasted many fine voices and contributed to the service.
Hiett has returned to Cheyenne county to stay. He brought his family and hopes they will enjoy their former health. He once held a lucrative Chicago position but illness in the family prompted the move back to the country where three hearty meals a day and restful nights await.
The proclamation by Governor Morehead urges yesterday and today as clean-up days. Sidney has begun well this season but more work is needed to refresh new and old buildings with paint. Streets and yards are in good condition, and the city aims to please the governor with a tidy, fair appearance.
R A Tiffany and his bride arrived unannounced Tuesday night and quietly moved into Edgar Dedrich's deserted mansion in Sidney. The couple visited Mrs Kings for breakfast eggs, drawing immediate neighborly attention as friends filled the home with social visits until Mr Tiffany reported to work in Omaha.
