The chamber of commerce circulated hundreds of folders advertising Sidney to tourist bureaus camps stations and hotels along Highway 30. The pamphlets list twenty five advantages of living and doing business in Sidney. Five thousand folders were printed last fall but held until spring to catch tourist traffic. Public may request folders by calling Jack Lowe secretary. The COC aims to distribute all five thousand this year and seeks public assistance.
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration outlines state by state divisions of 6,000,000 acres to be removed from cultivation this year and returned to grass. Administrator H. R. Tolley says county committees will work with farmers to reach goals, with 50 cents per acre paid for land taken out. State totals cap the plan at 3,000,000 acres in the Great Plains north and south regions, including Nebraska with 425,000 acres.
Sidney, Nebraska celebrates Franklin Hornaday native son as he appears on a CBS radio program with Grace Moore. He sang a Caruso number and earned praise from Moore and opera commentator Deems Taylor noted his Sidney birth. Hornaday left Sidney two years ago to study opera and his future prospects are highlighted.
Funeral services were held in Ogallala for Mrs Kath ryn Genevieve Jeffres 41 of Sidney who died in Scottsbluff hospital after a heart attack Sunday. A Nebraska native from Greeley county she had lived in Sidney for years and was working on a sewing project. She was visiting two daughters in Scottsbluff when she suffered the heart attack and died minutes later.
County board members held an unofficial session Tuesday to tackle the looming budget problem. Under new state law the county must publish its budget figures in August and officials struggle to reach agreement on anticipated expenses for the coming year.
Officials outline required practices under the 1938 agricultural conservation program with start dates for payments. May 1 deadlines cover weed control districts, soil building on cover crop wheat, deferred grazing, and summer fallow first operation. Other cutoff dates include May 15 for multi-farm agreements, June 1 for spring seeding and forms 115, and September 1 for late seeding and approvals, with November 1 and 15 as further limits for cover crops and Timothy seeding.

Kenosha Auto Transport Corp has not closed its western terminal in Sidney by Wednesday noon though all routings go through Kansas and Colorado. Manager Don Berman-away for a week, rumored to be negotiating a new terminal site possibly in Topeka Kansas. General Barlow Nye retracts claim of bluffing over Nebraska route. Berman cites data showing possible half-price operation via Kansas.

Local notice reports Miss Anna Van Aelstyn daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Van Aelstyn of Sidney wed Thomas H Baker of Hollywood California in Santa Monica on February 14 this year. The couple traveled to Mexico City after the ceremony and now reside in Hollywood where Baker works as a linotype operator. Mrs Baker grew up in Sidney and attended St Patrick academy. Before marriage she worked as a beauty operator in Cheyenne.
Nebraska may produce the largest winter wheat crop in eight years if experts’ 61,373,090 bushel forecast holds. Record production was 71,934,000 in 1930, with recent years much lower due to drought. With favorable weather, 4,721,000 acres seeded, and potential yield near 13 bushels per acre, officials see brighter prospects though risks like rust and rainfall remain.
The department of agriculture and inspection warned inspectors and port of entry attendants to caution gasoline dealers about improper advertising of gas prices. A sign reading gasoline, cents misleads motorists into believing all regular gas at that station sells for that price. The state law requires the sign to designate the fuel sold for that price, with antiknock fuels an exception.
Installation of equipment at Sidneys motor vehicle testing station is complete but inspections await official state approval. Mayor Roche said changes to the manual governing inspections must be agreed upon. Harvey Vizina will head the station in the former Simpson Machine Shop building on Burlington property.

At the Cheyenne County Achievement Day in Sidney representatives chose Mrs. James A. Sparks of Sidney as County Chairman for the coming year, with Mrs. George Coulter of Potter as assistant. The program highlighted cooking, clothing, home management, and personal development lessons guided by State Agricultural College specialists. In 1937, 276 women across 15 clubs participated, and the event featured a pageant on American history and a candle ceremony honoring club leaders.

Fred Grothe a 16 year old Potter high school athlete was struck on the head by a heavy metal discus thrown during a Potter track meet. He was brought to Taylor hospital for observation after losing consciousness and later regained it. X rays showed no fracture or concussion but he remained under observation for a day or so.
Kenneth Johnson son of Mrs Jennie Johnson of Sidney married Phyllis Holland in Independence Iowa on April 9 at the Methodist church. Both graduates of the University of Iowa they first met there. Johnson also graduated from Sidney high school class of 1930 and is connected with Kane Engraving Co of Mason City. They plan to reside in Mason City after May 1.
Lizzie Bransfield of Cadiz Ohio, aged 103, cherishes tobacco and simple pleasures. She has worked 85 years at Harrison county infirmary and recalls her mother living to 110. If she outlives tobacco, she says she will be ready to pass on and be forgotten.
Officials of the Wye-Braska Boy Scout area council report a record year with 33 active troops and seven new troops to be registered soon. Alliance, Broadwater, Chadron, Sunrise, and Yoder host new units while Minot Troop 12 is re-registered. The executive committee tentatively sets June 4 for a large council jamboree as several hundred scouts are expected.
Miss Lulu Boles treasurer and business manager of Isabella Thoburn College Lucknow India visits the city as a house guest of Rev J J Sheaff. She arrived in the United States for a year long furlough at her Lincoln home. The college founded 1886 as Asia's first Christian school.
Tax Commissioner Smith announced a district meeting plan with assessors from surrounding counties. Meetings will be held in Omaha on April 15 Ord April 21 North Platte April 22 Sidney April 23 and Madison April 28 to discuss potential issues in their work.
Lions Club and Fox Theatre sponsor a two tier Easter egg hunt in Sidney this Saturday. Older children ten and up gather at 11:45 in front of the Fox Theatre for transport to the city park. tots under ten hunt at the court house yard. Awards from merchants and adult sponsors will ensure plenty of prizes and safety for all participants.
A heavy rain began in Sidney at 6 30 last night and within an hour yielded about a quarter inch. This follows several unsettled days with cloudiness and unseasonably mild temperatures bringing springlike weather to the panhandle. Dust storms hit central Nebraska while Sidney saw mild winds and a heavy haze. Last night rain after a beneficial snow the prior week boosts winter wheat prospects, described as the best in eight years.
American Legion members can obtain a free ticket to the Kimball dance tonight by paying dues this day said District Commander William Ackerman. The event is public and will admit members with paid-up cards for the year while aiming to boost local membership. A fine band is hired for the affair.
Track teams from Ogalalla Kimball Bridgeport and Sidney High Schools contest a quadrangular meet at Sidney High School. In a prior Chappell triangular Ogallala led with 60 percent of points Sidney 54 percent and Chappell 37.42. Event results show top finishers in hurdles sprints distance and field events with times and distances noted for each.
