Sidney Council keeps sewer plant at current site in decision

Sidney City Council urged the EPA to build new wastewater facilities at the present location despite a protest from east Sidney residents. The panel also approved codified ordinances, junk on private property enforcement, a Consumer Communications Reform Act show of support, a Class C license for Stag Tavern, and a $5,065.35 Western Heritage Apartments expense check. They discussed rising power costs from Wheat Belt and Tri State, planned concrete bleachers at Legion Park costing up to 2,000, and asked for state lighting at the I 80 east interchange.

Oliver Dam hearing set for April at Kimball County High School

South Platte Natural Resources District schedules a public hearing for April 26 at 7 pm at Kimball County High School to discuss the Oliver Dam project and land acquisition. The meeting follows a 42 hour session previewing the Hoskins Western Sonderegger recreation plan and input from landowners Singleton Tomich and Forsling on public, private, and mixed use options including a large potential land donation and hundreds of recreational housing lots. The board plans to select an appraiser and will decide on final actions at the next regular meeting in May, with by law adoption tabled and a Potter drainage study committee formed. Rotary District 563 conference opens in Sidney

About 300 Rotarians and wives from 31 clubs in western Nebraska gather in Sidney for a three day district conference. The agenda includes 4 p.m. registration Thursday, sessions at Fort Sidney Motor Hotel and Elks Lodge, speakers such as Rep Virginia Smith and District Gov Elmer Hartmann, a memorial service, luncheons, a banquet, dance, and a Saturday panel on Rotary objectives culminating in a noon closing luncheon.

Rejection of aid hits regional electrical firms hard

Optimistic Bid to Save Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce

Richard Fix, president of the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce, aims for 225 to 220 members by Tuesday to fund a chamber manager and prevent dissolution. Eight board members will resign if membership does not reach target. a 7:30 pm vote is set at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel with 300 outreach cards sent to past and present members.

Panhandle income surges 85 percent in five years

A Nebraska Panhandle study shows personal income rising 85 percent from 1969 to 1974, far outpacing state and national gains. Farm income and manufacturing propelled growth with Banner, Deuel, Box Butte leading percentage increases, while most counties rose above the state 55 percent average.

County spelling bee selects 18 finalists Saturday

Eighteen youths from sixth to eighth grades vie at Sidney Senior High School cafeteria starting 9 30 a m for Cheyenne County champion. The winner could represent the county at the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha. Reichert notes no prior county entries to Midwest. Top three from each prior round advance to the 18 finalist slate.
