The Sidney City Council authorized a 500000 expansion of the utility system to add generating capacity and improve street lighting. Fulton and Cramer of Lincoln will prepare plans. bids for the power plant work are expected around June 1 with equipment delivery in about six months.
Members and guests of American Legion Post 17 are invited to attend the Friday the 13th Couples party at the Legion Club. The event starts at 8 30 with entertainment dancing door prizes and food. Admission is $1 per couple.
The City Council weighs discontinuing the municipal steam department and may extend steam users a transition period to May 1953 to switch to other heat. The costly system became infeasible after natural gas arrived, and recommendations are under study with a decision likely within a month. Two years is proposed for current users to convert.
The Sidney Business and Professional Women's Club elected Mrs. C. V. Sowards as president replacing Mrs. Roy Wells. Elizabeth Schwasnick became vice president, Marguerite McMillan treasurer, and Mary Bess secretary. New officers to be installed May 14. A scholarship fund plan was approved. The Crusade Against Cancer drive runs April 13 to 30 with Mrs. Russell Dedrick as chair. A parliamentary procedure skit was presented.
An Oregon man, Charles Ray Linn of Klamath Falls, is held on auto theft charges after Nebraska Highway Patrol arrested him near Browns on Sunday April 8. He allegedly stole a car owned by Frank Pecoraro of Reno Oregon in late March. Linn, stopped for intoxication, was found to be wanted for theft and was later involved in a Wyoming crash causing about 500 dollars of damage. He has waived extradition and Oregon authorities will retrieve him.
The Telegraph reports official results after last week’s Potter election show Chris Terman 123 votes, Lester Willoughby 84, E Clatterbuck 83, and Ervin Wheeler 5, correcting earlier figure errors.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce reports 148 members paid and pledged with $7,425 in dues, $1,075 short of the 1951 budget, but Secretary Gordon Tobin expects to raise the gap this month. City growth and prominence make an active Chamber vital for local business benefits.
The Wheat Belt Electric Membership Association nominated candidates from three districts for its nine member board. Incumbents Spiker Smith and Peeks lead the slate with May 22 annual meeting set in Sidney City Auditorium. Floor nominations possible.
The Cheyenne County Education Association will hold its annual dinner Monday night in the Yendis Cafe party room. Elmer Hartman, president, says dinner will be served at 6 30. County boards of education are invited as special guests. Ralph Brooks, McCook superintendent, will be the principal speaker. T R Tillotson leads the program and a business meeting will name officers for the coming year.
The terrace-building demonstration at the Fred Larson farm in Banner County is postponed to next Tuesday. Sponsored by Banner County Soil Conservation District, it will feature machines such as the terracing plow moldboard plow whirlwind terracer elevating grader and road patrol starting at 9 a.m. A free lunch is served at noon. The Larson farm lies 17 miles north 4 miles east and 1.5 miles south of Kimball one mile west and one mile south of the Heath schoolhouse.
Western Nebraska reports rain and wet snow easing drought in Cheyenne County and parts of the Panhandle, with moisture improving conditions for winter wheat. Analysts project a potential all time high Nebraska yield near 92 million bushels if warm weather arrives, while national drought and insect concerns temper optimism.
The Reuter Pipe Organ recently installed at Dalton Presbyterian Church will be dedicated at 2:30 p.m. next Sunday with a recital featuring Warren Berryman, Hastings College organ instructor. Gifts honor Benton Lyle Walker and others. Berryman, from Omaha, studied at several universities and taught at the University of West Virginia before joining Hastings College. The program includes Bach, Handel, Mendelssohn, and Saint-Saëns pieces among others.
Honorary memberships will be awarded to one man and one woman for outstanding work. The event on Thursday April 26 will be a semi formal dinner dance in the Yendis party room. Bruce Juelfs chairs the organizing committee with Jay Peters Verlin Livingston Linda Hopkins and Pat Pelster. A Monday meeting unveiled the plans and featured L M Clinton Sidney attorney who spoke on the jury system. Six new members Ardlyn Simpson Theresa Lovell Jo Person Robert Spearow Dorothy Becker and Renee Strom joined the Rural Youth.
Governor Val Peterson signed a bill opening deer hunting in Banner county and extending the season to all of Sheridan county. The measure, sought by Banner ranchers, permits killing deer and limits hunting licenses to one every three years.
Rain making plans in Southwestern Nebraska shift starting date from Sunday April 15 to after a Tuesday board meeting. L M Clinton and Water Resources Development Association will meet with Rainmakers representatives to sign a contract and begin work soon. Clouds will be seeded using portable generators dispersing silver iodide nuclei to form raindrops.
The Neeley School of Dance will stage a three-part review titled The Dancing Dolls at Sidney City Auditorium on Monday night, April 23. Instructor Miss Jo Neeley created and directed the varied program with sections Dancing Dolls from Far Away, Ballerina Dolls, and Dancing Dolls in the U. A. The show begins at 8 o'clock.
Ohio Oil Co recovers 3 million cubic feet of gas at Johnson No 1 on R. W. Johnson farm, 5 miles north and 4 east of Sidney, with coring under way and a second drill stem test planned. Additional results from Sidegard No 2 in Huntsman and Miller No 2 in East Gurley also reported. Sinclair wildcat Gildersleeve No 1 test failed. attempts to recondition planned.
The Sidney Lions Club adopts a yearly Recognition Day honoring all thirteen trades students and their instructor Ray Maley at the April 25 meeting. Students will introduce themselves and describe their special trades work, with a future exhibition planned to show results. The trades program is part of the high school curriculum and links work with school credit.
The post of City Attorney has been offered to Attorney L. M. Clinton to succeed J. H. McNish who is recalled to active duty in the U S Army. Clinton would take over when McNish severs ties with the city around the 25th. City Manager Virgil Knowles announced official council approval at Monday night’s meeting.
