Nebraska Coalition for Life meets in Sidney on Saturday

About 30 Nebraskans attended the Nebraska Coalition for Life monthly meeting in Sidney where president Ann Bowen of Omaha announced plans for a delegate and candidate abortion survey in Nebraska. Surveys completed or outstanding will be mailed, compiled, and published before elections. The group discussed a pro life amendment before Congress and viewed films, with the next meeting scheduled for Grand Island next month.

Church urges elderly champion in White House in Lincoln visit

AP reports Sen Frank Church campaigned at the Tabitha Home for the Elderly saying seniors need a defender in the White House and that national health insurance should wait for Medicare gains. He urged strengthening Social Security with a six month escalator and dismissed dire warnings about Social Security’s fate as unfounded.

Nebraska and Sterling beet growers reject Great Western offer

Nebraska Non-Stock Beet Growers Association members voted 797 to three to reject individual contracts with Great Western Sugar Co at an emergency meeting in Scottsbluff. Sterling area growers also rejected the offer, while concerns about an extraction-based payment and planting delays threaten sugar beet production and profits.

School Board Meets Tonight In Sidney For 1976 77 Talks

The Sidney school board will meet at 7 45 pm in the junior high library to discuss teachers contracts for 1976 77 and other items. Elections will replace certain teachers, contract extensions for Anse Lewis, and the continuation of Norm Fletchall and Marie Runge in their posts. Bids for the junior high cyclorama and lathe will be opened as part of the agenda.

Chappell Leads At Chadron State College Scholastic Contest

Chappell won the Class III championship with 33 points at the 16th Inter-High Scholastic Contest held at Chadron State College. Potter tied for second with 14 points, while nine Chappell students earned top-three medals. Rapid City Stevens claimed the grand championship. Alliance High took Class I and Julesburg repeated as Class champion. A record 2,108 students participated.

UP Lineman Killed By Train Near Sidney

William L. Riedel a 38 year old Union Pacific Railroad lineman from Burns Wyoming was killed instantly this morning six miles west of Sidney Cheyenne County when he failed to hear a freight train whistle and was struck while working on a track section at about 820 a.m He was operating an air hammer with another man at the time and no other injuries were reported.

Wheat Belt crews back from York after power line rebuild

A 12 man Wheat Belt Public Power District crew returned to Sidney after about 10 days restoring roughly 20 miles of downed lines in York McCool Junction and Henderson Nebraska after an ice and snow storm knocked out power across 10 000 square miles. Nebraska Public Power District warns large scale preventive measures are impractical due to cost and rates.

Visitation marks ESU self-evaluation program starts

Educational Service Unit No 14 begins the second phase of a three part self evaluation with a 21 member external visitation team. Residents urge study of Sidney trash rail plan

A Sidney leading group presents up to 15 petitions to the city council asking for an extensive study of the proposed one man trash rail system. They seek no firm commitments until hearings and full public discussion are held before any change. The council meets at 7 30 p m at City Hall with agenda including downtown improvements paving bids a liquor license hearing and county court system remarks.
