Lobbyists Clash Over Nebraska Wheat Tax Measure
Senator Arthur Carmody of Trenton charged the lieutenant governor with lobbying against the bill as it moved through the legislature. He urged re passage, criticizing Gov Val Peterson for leaving the state. Senator Carmody predicted the two mill per bushel tax would raise 50 000 to 100 000 dollars annually for wheat research and promotion, with refunds available for growers who objected. The bill passed 27 to 4 after failing to secure an emergency clause by 26 to 9.
